I had my son and three of his teammates in my truck last weekend and they were SCREAMING along to "Timber". Every word. Was awesome and awful at exactly the same time.

Honestly, I wouldn't. I'm pretty sheltered from pop culture in general and I don't think I have ever watched a Grammy show in my life. I think I have watched the CMA awards a couple of times and the Oscar show once ( the year Tom Hanks won for Forrest Gump, lol). Other than that I haven't ever watched an awards show at all.

 

However, if I were in the entertainment industry, and was invited to appear/perform then I am sure I would be in tune with the scene enough to know exactly what to expect.

Funny you bring that song up....Few friends and I went to a bar this past weekend, and that song came on. Not a single one of us had ever heard it before. We were clearly the only people in the bar that hadn't. :lol2: We're getting old.

As you know my oldest is 26. The Clyde family listens to A LOT of music in the house and car. When he was about 4 years old we were visiting Grandma. My boy strolls into the kitchen where his grandma and aunts are and busts out some Bad Company - "feel like making love."

Since your 26 year old is basically a nephew to me, I can say this: that story surprises me not at all!

So let's move past the fact that you don't like the music of today. You WOULD know what to expect , right?

 

Why would anyone know what to expect? You can assume there will be some things you don't like or agree with but maybe the combination of several performances were enough for her.

There has been great music in every era (except early 90's with Grunge Crap) and every era has music that is revolting to the older generations.

 

But that said, it is getting harder to find.

Why would anyone know what to expect? How can you not? Maybe she's never watched the show . Someone in her posse , though, would have to have an inkling.

 

It's like Kanye going to the Christian Music Awards and leaving because there's too much bible thumping going on.

Music is just as good as it ever was. There's great stuff being produced all the time, you just won't find it much on TV anymore. The rise of mass media coincided with the rise of the internet meaning the easiest people to mass market to are kids and old people. That's who pop music is for.

There is great, GREAT music still coming out. I could even argue that with the technological advances in the world today and the coinciding affordability of very decent recording equipment, etc, there's actually *more* great music coming out. The challenge lies in being able to cull through everything that's out there in order to find what's good.

 

Open offer to anyone on BGP: Give me a list of 7 or 8 of your favorite bands/musicians, and I'll give you a playlist of "new" music to look into.

I left the room after the Beyonce performance but I think it may have been for different reasons.

Here is some perspective.

The above story was set to some of the most beautiful music ever written. Critics called it "immoral", a "failure", "scandalous", and "superficial". The year was 1875. The opera was Carmen by Georges Bizet. Today, it is one of the world's most popular operas and is performed constantly.

 

The point...every generation will create new music that is criticized by a previous generation. It has happened for hundreds of years. If you don't want to see something that you consider bad at an awards show, don't go or keep your eyes and ears shut. If you don't want your kids exposed to certain violence or music messages, restrict their viewing and listening when they are very young because you won't get the chance once they are teenagers. Ultimately, it is not a question of something becoming good or bad. It is just a matter of whether it does or does not fall in line with our personal value systems (however they are established).

If anything, grunge saved us from the awful hair-metal days and, frankly, made rock'n'roll good again, if but for a short time. Rock music in the late-'80s was atrociously bad.

Older generations think all new music is crap and that their era was the best ever. Rinse. Repeat...

 

Maybe in general, but not here. I DVR'd and watched ALL the performances from the Grammy's with these observations:

 

1) Even if she agreed with everything it would be hard as heck to sit there for 3+ hours! Thanks goodness for fast forward.

2) There is music, then there is performance art. Some of the performers...Katy Perry for one, who I really like was much more about the performance than the music as were a number of others. Pink is the only one I have seen who can pull off high musical quality at the same time as high performance art..kind of Cirque du Soleil.

3) I agree all the music didn't fit my taste, but that's why there is all different kinds.

4) I thought John Legend was the best out of the whole show. Pink was really good, but her duo partner was really straining to not quite reach his notes.

5) I haven't watched enough to get the robot thing...but I go with Blue Man Crew anyway.

 

Just my thoughts.
