2014 Jack Kaelin NKY Freshman Invitational Tourney

Featured Replies

Should be a great championship game. IMO NCC and CCH are the top 2 freshman teams in NKY and they get a chance to showcase their talents monday night. Good luck to both.

Whats up with Freppon at NCC? not in scoring column last 2 games, hurt?

Congratulations to Newport Central Catholic as with the win, NCC advances to play in the Championship game on Monday night February 17th at 7:30 pm Vs. the winner of the Simon Kenton Vs. CovCath game at CovCath.

TOG...Zach Jarman is my next door neighbor, how do you think he played? I know that he scored 7, I was just curious what kind of a player he is.

The young man played and had 2 fouls called on him but did not score!

Thanks. I was just surprised, as he is very talented and hadn't seen him in the scoring column the last 2 games.

Just wanted to add that while a couple have not scored as much as usual they seem to be contributing in other ways in these wins. From watching these last few games it appears they have fixed what went wrong in the Highlands game.

Best of luck to these young men and thank you to CCH for broadcasting the championship game, I'll be rooting for NCC from a distance.

As I have done in the past years below are the roster of each team who played in The Jack Kaelin 2014 Freshmen Tournament. Not often does every young man gets to see his name in the lights so to speak and at least for some, it might be the last time they play high school basketball, so I like to make sure they all get mentioned whether they scored or not, as they all are a part of the team!

Note: If I have misspelled a name, it wasn't done intentionally but there are a lot of names......

While the CovCath concession stand be serving the Salvatore (sp?) Pizza Monday night?

Pretty sure they will, as I believe after each game the kids have been eating the outstanding Salvadore's Pizza and TOG couldn't have got through the 1st Saturday of the Tourney's long, long day, without a slice or was it two or three!

The Jack Kaelin Freshman Tournament

formerly known as

The Freshman Regional Tournament

History

The Freshman Regional Tournament originally began in the early 1960's. Some of the host of the Tournament were Ockerman Junior HS, Newport Catholic and Conner HS. The Tournament moved to Covington Catholic in 1970 and has remained there since that time.

In the early years at Covington Catholic there was a twenty-ream field and the Tournament was played over three consecutive weeks. After a few years with the large field, the single "A" schools decided to have their own Tournament. Since that time the Tournament field has fluctuated between aprozimately fourteen to eighteen teams. Jack Kaelin directed the Tournament for many years, with his last year being the 2006-2007 season. It has been through his efforts that many of the traditions have continued.

A number of successful athletes have performed on the stage of the Freshman Regional Tournament and then went on to lead their respective varsity teasms to regional titles. In a similar way, referees too have experienced notoriety. The Freshman Regional has seen its fair share of referees that have gone on to call varsity regional games and a few have even been selected for the Kentucky Boys Sweet Sixteen Tournament.

The Freshman Regional has maintained very good crowds in the past years. In particular, the finals typically draw large crowds, and even saw one sell-out in the 1990's (a final match-up between Highlands and Covington Catholic). Come experience the finals and watch the future of Northern Kentucky High School Basketball.

Trophy Presentation

At the conclusion of the tournament a trophy presentation will be made to:

2014 All-Tournament Team Players

(Presented by the Freshman Coaches following the finals)

2014 Freshmen Runner-up

2014 Jack Kaelin Freshman Tournament Champions

Champions will cut down the nets!

Pretty sure they will, as I believe after each game the kids have been eating the outstanding Salvadore's Pizza and TOG couldn't have got through the 1st Saturday of the Tourney's long, long day, without a slice or was it two or three!

From the days I was at the game watching I saw that CCH provided pizza and drinks for the players after the games.

Class act by CCH in every way in making these boys feel every bit as important as the varsity teams.....

I believe they still do.
