Brossart won the marathon 2014 Touchstone Energy 10th Region All "A" Classic Tournament 62-30 over the Robertson County Black Devils on Wednesday night at Regents Hall at NKU, in what was the 13th day since this event started back on January 10th.

 

The Mustangs, playing without the services of their standout senior point guard, Jake Jennings, who sustained a broken hand at practice last Friday. The Mustangs led the Black Devils 10-9 after a period of play, but exploded for 21 points in the second period while holding the Devils to 2, allowing the Mustangs to open up at 31-11 lead at the half, and for all intents and purposes, punched their ticket to Frankfort for the All "A" State tournament which tips off next Thursday, January 30th where they will play the champions of Region 1 at 9:30pm (or maybe 11pm).

 

The Mustangs were led by Alex Trentman who scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. Erik Rieger, thrust into the point guard role, performed admirably, knocking down four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. The Mustangs welcomed back Senior Ted MacDonald to the lineup, his first appearance of the season after battling a chronic wrist injury which cost him his senior football season. Big Red Ted responded by scoring 7 points.

 

With his 21 points, Alex Trentman closes to within 19 points of the Brossart/St. Mary 1,000 Points Club. Mike Code won his 196th victory as the head coach of the Mustangs, closing in on winning 200.

 

Eric Rieger was the recipient of the Brossart team tournament's Academic Award. Alex Trentman, Drew Burns, and Jake Jennings were all named to the All-Tournament team.

An expected result, but congrats to the Mustangs! :thumb: Kudos to all the kids, but especially to young Mr. Rieger who seemed to perform well in a difficult spot. :thumb:

The kid had a pretty good tourney. Averaged just under 26 PPG and had 10 rebounds per game. Stop by Brossart tomorrow night on your way home from the hospital as he will try to reach the 1,000 point club versus Harrison county. He sits 19 points shy.

As for the other spokes in the wheel of the 10th Region All A champs;

Burns averaged 12.6 ppg, and 6 RPG along with 10 assist!

Jennings, lead the Stangs at point prior to the injury and dished out 12 assists in just 2 games.

Hackworth shot 50% from behind the arc.

Rieger dropped in 6 treys (4 last night) and took over the point and only had 1 turnover last night.

Shannon picked up for the missing Jennings and did a great job on the boards. Kramer and McDonald also gave great minutes.

And if you have seen the Mustangs play, there are so many other little things they do so well as a unit. Fun team to watch.

It reallt was another great team effort in winning their 19th game of the season and 14th in a row. Coach Code talked about this senior class and they do have a special bond. They have won a lot of games together, starting back in their freshman year going 26-1 and winning the 10th region frosh tourney, playing AAU this summer, etc. And their mission is not over yet.

 

I also want to give a special shout out to the group of Brossart parents that helped run the show the past 2 weeks. What a great event! Waters and Gatorade for the players, Hospitality room, corporate sponsors, Teeshirts, Web casts, photos on the website, videos--All of this while constantly rescheduling the games at NKU (another great partner). Truly another wonderful team effort by the parents of both the girls and boys teams .

Good luck to Alex Trentman tonight. I'm assuming it is pretty hard for a kid to get 1,000 in a Brossart style offense. He has been putting up some huge numbers this season. I don't get to see many of the 10th region teams play, but he has to be one of the better ones!
