Agree with more statewide recognition, but could be because advancements in social media since then as well. Both are/were pretty darn good...

 

I haven't seen a ranking that has shown three 9th region teams in the top 6 in the state. Maybe top 11, but haven't seen the top 6 in the state... I probably just missed it.

 

Could have easily... I believe it still wound up a 1 possession game. Just a bit more hard luck for the Ninth...

 

My point was the 3 elite northern Kentucky teams, and their best players, are getting more recognition statewide than the teams and players (except neltner) did that year, followed by an early exit, albeit a hard luck one, at the state tournament...

The top to bottom thing might be correct, but I don't recall where any of those teams were ranked statewide in 2003, and I don't ever recall 3 northern Kentucky teams in the top 6 in the state. Also, I know it is the luck of the draw, but the Ninth Region representative that year (St. Henry) went out in the first round, albeit to a very good team. I am hoping for a much deeper run in the state tournament this year....

 

2003 wasn't as good as good as some of the 90s years. Walter is showing his age. Heck the Holmes team that year would be lucky to play on same court as some of those early 90s teams from Holmes.

I won't diminish his 3 pt shooting % and I don't think Lexfan did either. It takes skill to knock those down.

 

His point , though, is spot on. It's why I asked elsewhere if any other team has tried to take Pangallo out of the equation like CCH did and make him be the point guard. If not, he'll kill you from the looks he gets. If he's hitting 3s your D is in trouble.

Dixie, Simon Kenton, and Highlands were all top 20 teams before the season started. St Henry moved in to the top 20 as the season progressed.

Neltner ended up playing at LSU and Vandy.

Brock ended up at EKU.

Doellman ended up at X.

Englemon went on to play at Michigan for football.

Schmidt had some small D1 looks but never recovered fully from the injury against MC.

 

This year's top 5:

Bolden- D1 mid-high major prospect

Ruthsatz- D2 Findlay

Hatton- D1 Vermont U

McDonald- D1 mid major prospect

Chames- JUCO ...would be high D2, MAYBE small D1 (according to coaches)

 

Put the top 5 players in the region that year against the top 5 in the region this year, and it's not even close who wins.

 

Again, the size and depth of the players in the region that year are on another level compared to this year. EVERY team had a 6'6 or bigger big man. As big as Newcath is this year, that was what you saw every night out that year.

You also have to look at the level of competition as well statewide that year and this year.

 

Holmes, Covcath, and Newcath are all top 6 teams in the state this year but probably wouldn't have been in the top 3 in the 9th REGION that year.

All that may be so... but as far as objective facts go, I do not believe there have ever been 3 Ninth Region teams ranked in the top 6, or top 10 for that matter, in any statewide polls, for the last 40 years at least.

 

I would also respectfully disagree, although this is purely an opinion... I believe any of these three teams would have been the best team in the region in 2003, and I believe Bolden is better and has a bigger future than any of the big big three that year (Neltner, Brock or Doellman). My opinion only... I'll let you know how that turns out in about 6 years....

I think schuh and cvh belong in the discussion. i got to see new cath play over the weekend, moeves is moving up the ladder.

Admittedly, I don't get to see many 9th Region teams but after seeing Newcath play I can't believe the Weyer kid isn't in the top ten somewhere. He really impressed me with his size and hustle. Just a Sophomore I think. A side note as my perspective is that the 9th Region's top-to-bottom talent level is nearing the 7th & 11th regions'.

You are right!!!! For some reason I forgot about Jordan.....great player!!!!! I haven't gotten to SE him this year but he was a beast last year. Can't believe I forgot about Jordan, played with my boy on aas team for several years.
