Let's talk about a couple of the plays that the announcers questioned the officials calls on.

 

1. It is NEVER basket interference when a defender hits the backboard. Never. Apparently on more than one occasion Cooper defenders hit the backboard when attempting to block a shot where a foul was called on the shot. If the official says it was a legit attempt to block the shot then nothing is called for the backboard hit. Even if the officials think it was NOT a legit attempt it's not basket interference and no points are awarded. It would be a technical foul.

What the announcers may be alluding to is that when the Cooper players smacked the backboard going for the block it caused the basket to move. If ball is on the rim and the entire basket and backboard is moving it should be a goal tend, in my opinion. That happened at least two times this evening and maybe three times. I equate it to grabbing the rim when ball is near hoop or grabbing the net with ball on rim. The basket supports with those long extensions are not real stable and have a lot of wiggle to them.

Glover was absolutely huge for tonight and really gave Holmes a lift.

Chames was also big as well. Cooper plays tight stingy man to man defense but Holmes ran some dribble motion and Chames was able to attack the basket from the perimeter a few times.

Holmes has a tough game Tuesday night versus Mason County.

Sounds like a very typical Cooper game. Outstanding defense and difficult to find offensive consistency. They are going to keep teams under their season scoring average. For Holmes they have been getting much more balanced scoring. Looks like the Cov Cath game was a real learning experience for them. They hung in with and beat a solid team with Bolden not getting his usual minutes.

I loved Sullivan's answer to Walter's question regarding McNeil. I'm not quite sure if coach Sullivan listened to that one.

Not to drag it out too much, but how many of those misses were on the front end of 1 and 1's meaning their attempts could've even been more?

 

I'm guessing too that a lot of the misses were in bunches in the 2nd half, as I watched all of the webcast that I could, it just seemed like towards the end of the game it was one after another as I was rooting for them to pull away to secure the game.

 

I kept thinking "C'mon guys put it well out of reach".

 

It just seemed to be more magnified then as I was nibbling at my nails for them to get the 'W'.

 

Thankfully they did.

Make no doubt. Holmes won this game and they were the better team last nite. However this was a winnable game for Cooper. True Bolden went out in the first half in foul trouble but like the 2nd half he was being defensed fairly well primarily by Morgan who in my opinion defends him better than anyone in NKY, just MO. Beetle is a great player and cannot be fully stopped.

So while he was out a great portion of the first half no one in the gym would have thought McNeil would have went scoreless in the last 3qtrs of the game either.

Not taking anything away from the Bulldogs win but when I see posts indicating if FTs were made it would have been a blowout I scratch my head because while Cooper does not have the offensive prowess like most of the teams they play they do cause problems with their defense. And let's not forget the younger McNeil is still out with a foot injury and while the outcome may have been the same he will pose some serious problems upon his return which the Jags hope to be real soon.

Again, congrats to the dawgs as they are one of the top 2 in this region.

No doubt Cooper can cause problems with defense, and they did. Nobody is guarding anybody when they are standing at the foul line shooting a freebie. The Dogs missed eleven judging by the final stats, but how many were on the front end of a 1 and 1? I personally don't know, but do know there were some. Blowout if more were made is not exactly the indication I was trying to emphasize, nor did I use the word blowout, but they certainly could have put the game away far sooner than they did. They made 23 FT attempts that would've been more attempts if front ends were made. Great defense or not, no hands were in anyones faces for the freebies. Not getting your logic. I'm the one scratching my head.

I was originally interpreting your comment along the lines of hearing fans calling for a technical on such attempts at blocking shots.

You are correct that there is no goal tend call on that. Its to an advantage of the defense to attempt to block a shot at rim by hitting the backboard in which will create a scenario of not knocking the ball off the rim. Cooper has those baskets with a single support and any action on the board is going to cause the entire basket to swivel.

I thought Housley's defense on McNeil was strong last night particularly in the second half.

That was my first time in Cooper's gym. It is a really clean facility but the lights are pretty dim for such a big place. Why do they not open up the second level bleachers?

Usually the upper level on the home side is open. I'm not sure why they didn't open it last night.
