Ivan McGlone era over at Russell

Featured Replies

I am saddened that this is how Russell has decided to allow Coach McGlone leave the sport he has given so much to. He is a great teacher of the game. A man who has stood the test of time and developed and won for decades. He also has turned out some great players and men from his program. I wish him the best in the future. Thanks for all the years coach

I, like all others on here just wanted to post my Congrats, Tribute to COACH Ivan McGlone. Russell is obviously a fierce rival with Raceland but that has absolutely, in jmo anyway, deepened the respect I have for the man. I put coach in all caps bc Ivan is a coach in the true sense of the term. Countess lives have been affected in a positive manner by Ivan McGlone, his many players that have not only learned the game of football but more important McGlone set the example on the game of life. I hope that former players have taken advantage of the example that he set. I certainly know quite a few that have and are great human beings as adults.

So, good luck and God Bless to COACH Ivan McGlone in the future. A Class Act.....he defines the term.

:thumb: Absolutely ! What "Some" at Russell have done and have said about the man, have handled the situation is a direct reflection on them and certainly not on Ivan McGlone. Those select people have obviously ignored, missed the lesson that McGlone set on having Class, how to carry yourself, treat people on and off the field and in life.

The Flatwoods legend

Royals use Russell as program measuring stick

It will not be the same going to Flatwoods in 2014 without my good friend and one of the finest people and coaches I've ever known on the other sideline. I know how much of a blessing Ivan has been to me and when you multiply that by the hundreds it is really incredible.

One of my favorite things about competing with Ivan and the Red Devils is as much as we wanted to win those always big games, my respect for him, his staff, and program was just as big. It is cool when you compete and have a rivalry with a program AND you have a great amount of respect for them.

Thank you to Coach McGlone for all that he has meant to so many. God Bless Ivan!

Best post on this thread.

Maybe it's not all roses on Red Devil Ln.

On Tuesday, McGlone met with school administrative officials again. "The suggestion is that I would stay one year and they could honor me," McGlone said. "But if I'm OK, why couldn't I do it the year after next? So I said, 'No, but I could stay three.' When I said that, I was almost immediately fired at that point.

"I'm glad I didn't say four years. They'd have probably executed me," McGlone chuckled.

As the reason of my post no. 18 / quote above.

Sad day and mixed emotions for me on Coach McGlone's departure ad how it went down. A lot could and will be said, but I'll just say this...

Sometimes it's hard to define the word class, but you know it when you see it, and Coach McGlone was it.

Proud to say I played for the man, and the things I learned from him weren't just Xs & O's, and I am still applying those things daily in my life.

He will be missed.

I haven't posted in some time but this, well it's just nuts. Ivan is one of the finest men that I've ever known. A true classless act on the part of the administration. They did Steve Dodd the same way, just a couple of years after winning the region in basketball for the first time since 1973.

Ivan is a legend and I would love to see a petition submitted with several thousand names signed on his behalf.

I've had the pleasure of knowing coach McGlone for many years. However, you lose all credibility when you compare Steve Dodd and Ivan McGlone. That's like comparing Raquel Welch and Roseann Barr. Look, he had to quit coaching some time.

First, I agree with you on the treatment given coach McGlone by that select group. Classless really doesn't begin to describe it and is the main reason of the amount of dislike that I have for the school. Has nothing to do with the kids and most of the very good fans at Russell. Do to the rivalry of course I want to beat the crap out of them but I also have a ton of respect for Russell football bc of McGlone and what he built there.

Also, I am glad to see you posting again and hope that you will continue.

^^ Prime example of what I was saying in an earlier post about the former players of McGlone that have taken in his lesson on class, life and put that in his own life. :thumb:

I believe that what happened with Coach McGlone is similar to what happened to Lee Evans at Boyd County. Where a few classes of middle school kids were very successful and a group of people came up with the idea that the reason the high school team wasnt winning was all due to coaching. The mutiny then happens and a good coach and a better teacher lose their job. The grass may look greener but what does it taste like?

I have two sons that were opponents of Ivan McGlone teams. My youngest had the privilege of playing against him last year and then meeting Mr McGlone later. He walked away impressed with the way Coach McGlone knew the game and could replay certain downs with him. There are over 50 years difference in age between the two and that is where the similarities end. However this man had that gift of connecting with kids that transcended time. Congratulations Coach McGlone on earning your legendary status.

I heard today that Coach Morris and Coach Smith officially retired from coaching and all other coaches were given pink slips. Coaches Evans and Caniff were asked to continue with the weight program only. The new coach will decide who is on his staff. Can anyone verify this?

Wow. I just find this unbelievable. I've known McGlone for a long time, nothing but a class act, can't believe it.

Congratulations to Coach McGlone' date=' he is definitely deserving of a well-earned rest. He really built the Russell program and his record speaks for itself and he is well respected among his peers. I hope the timing of his retirement was his own choosing.[/quote']

He didn't retire, he was let go.

He didn't retire, he was let go.
Thanks for that update. Little late to the party Captain.
