Michael Jordan’s nephew, Hargrave Military Academy playing game at NewCath on Saturday

Hargrave Military Academy, which annually produces several Division I college basketball players, will be playing a game against Rise Academy at 6 p.m. this Saturday at Newport Central Catholic.

Hargrave head coach A.W. Hamilton played high school basketball at Scott County, then at Hargrave for a year after graduation and was a college teammate at Marshall with former NewCath star Ronny Dawn, son of current NewCath boys’ head coach Ron Dawn.

Hamilton said via e-mail that the game at NewCath came about through a simple conversation about basketball with Ron Dawn and it worked into his team’s schedule because it is playing in Cleveland on Monday night.

Here is a press release from Hargrave about Saturday’s game:

Chatham, VA – Hargrave Military Academy’s postgraduate basketball team, currently ranked 2nd in the national polls, will be playing at Newport Catholic on January 18, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. The Tigers are led this year by Donte Grantham, the Mr. Basketball of West Virginia. Grantham, who has signed a scholarship with Clemson University, is ranked as one of the Top 50 players in the country for the Class of 2014. Another standout for Hargrave is Michael Jordan’s nephew, Justin Jordan. The Charlotte, North Carolina native has multiple division one offers and is expected to make his school commitment in the next upcoming weeks.

The Tigers are coached by former Marshall University standout point guard A.W. Hamilton. Coach Hamilton was named National Coach of the Year in 2012. The gate opens at 5:00 p.m. for this exciting event.

Hargrave Military Academy is an all-male military school focused on college preparation and character development. Founded in 1909, the Academy is noted for ongoing academic achievement in college placement, athletics and leadership.

They wanted to play the Breds, but KHSAA rules said otherwise.

What is a postgraduate basketball team? What poll are they ranked in? HS or post grad? Grantham has signed with Clemson, listed as a 2014 grad but they list the team as a member on a post graduate team?

Can someone clarify?

Thanks

Ge'Lawn Guyn is an example of a kid who did this when he graduated from Scott Co, went to a prep school instead of college, then to UC.

Basically like repeating your senior year before entering college. A lot of borderline kids will do this instead of taking the JUCO route.

Thanks! So where are they ranked #2?

I agree with the KHSAA decision to not allow high school teams to play this type of competition.

The updated NextUp national Top 10 for postgrad basketball teams has Fishburne Military School holding at #2.

FMS (14-2) defeated Rise Academy 89-84 Thursday in its return from the holiday break. Next up for the Caissons is a game Wednesday at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg against #10 Massanutten Military Academy.

Brewster Academy took over the top spot in the polls this week. Hargrave Military Academy is ranked third, with defending national champion Northfield Mt. Hermon, last week’s #1, dropping to fourth.

Wow, so there really is a lot of these teams featuring 19-20 year old post grads that plan on going to college? Do most have scholarships locked up before going to these schools or afterwards? What is the advantage over a juco? More eligibility in college?
