Is the NFL doing the Bengals/Marvin Lewis a favor?

Featured Replies

Making San Diego play the earliest game possible on the east coast almost doesn't seem fair to the Chargers. Or does it have everything to do with the NFL wanting the Bengals/Marvin Lewis to win a playoff game?

Thoughts?

Agree? Disagree?

Wouldn't they be playing in the early game Saturday if that were the case?

The league isn't doing anything to help a team win a playoff game.

Why would the NFL care if Lewis or the Bengals win a playoff game?

What other time/day should San Diego and the Bengals be playing?

They wouldn't. The timing of the games is all about ratings and marketing. They're playing the early game because the NFL knows the NFC games will be a better ratings draw in the primetime slots.

If they flipped the games Sunday it would still be the same travel/time scenario for the West coast team.

The early game on Saturday is later in the day. I have always felt it is an advantage for the east coast team if they are given an early time slot against a west coast team. The game Sunday is kicking off at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. It is a totally different routine than what they are accustomed to. I know there was a lot of talk about it on various radio shows on how west coast teams tend to struggle when they go east and have to play in the early time slot(s). On the other hand we are still talking about professionals and the better team should find a way to overcome the time differential.

I get the time differences. Don't want to worry about it, win your division and have a home game. The Sunday games both involve a West Coast team. The league did this because they realize the teams that have to travel cross-country would rather have the extra day's rest than a later kickoff.

It's ridiculous to think the NFL scheduled the game as such because they want the Bengals to win a playoff game though.

Like usual we disagree. This changed with the recent hiring of Lovie Smith but this is a big issue for the NFL:

The NFL has acknowledged disappointment regarding the lack of diversity in this year’s round of coaching and G.M. hires. There’s another trend that the league should regard as even more troubling.

As former Buccaneers and Colts coach Tony Dungy, now an analyst with NBC’s Football Night in America, has pointed out, it has been six years since an African-American head coach was hired as the result of an external search.

“Mike Singletary, Leslie Frazier and Romeo Crennel were named interim coaches when their bosses were fired during the season,” Dungy told PFT via email. “They were retained as permanent head coaches. Jim Caldwell, Raheem Morris and Hue Jackson were assistant coaches on staffs where there was a head-coaching opening and they were promoted from within. However, you have to go back to 2007 when the Steelers hired Mike Tomlin to see a situation where a team hired an African-American coach from outside their organization to be their head coach.”

Here is an other good article too:

Black former NFL coaches say Rooney Rule is broken - ESPN

I'm a firm believer of being a creature of habit. I think this Sun is a huge handicap for the Chargers having to play at 10 a.m.....IMO! Maybe that's the time of day when Philip Rivers delivers the mail:sssh:......Who knows?????

For the thread title and question posed, it is a Cincy advantage and it works to their favor, but not a conspiracy to have the Bengals advance.

I don't think it has to do with any of those scenarios. I think you had too much time on your hands to think that one up lol.

No matter who they play I'm pretty sure the League already had the times set even before the Chargers won their game to slip into the playoffs. If they really were out to get the Chargers they would of had it the early game on Saturday.

Again, the time of the early game on Saturday is much later.

I think the NFL wants more black head coaches.

How teams in the playoffs have minority head coaches? Cincy and Carolina? Am I missing anyone?

You really think the NFL is going to compromise the integrity of the game to help a minority coach win a playoff game???

I've heard some good ones before, but my goodness this takes the cake. That's beyond ridiculous.

Just curious: What day does SD come to town to prepare for this game on Sunday? Will they have a few days to adjust their internal clocks, or is it as late as Saturday where they'd have little chance to adjust?
