Depth is overrated in high school. You can only play 5 players at once anyway. If you have good players, you don't want to sit them much anyway in a 32 minute game. Those boys are in shape. They can run and play 32 minutes. How much do you want to sit McDonald, Pangallo, and Schulte? Do you really need more than 6-7 good, solid players in high school? I believe McDonald was sick last year during the All A Regional and they still pulled it out because he played thru it.

 

As far as the game tonight, Weyer, McDonald and Schulte all blocked shots and controlled the boards. McDonald and Weyer play great defense and all 3 are a great presence in the lane. Tanner Moeves, Schulte and Pangallo did a great job tonight getting down the floor when McDonald got a rebound because he ran a solid transition. He adds so much more to the game than just points. I'd like to know how many rebounds and assists he had. Grant and Tanner played good in your face perimeter defense. They team will only get better when Franzen joins them. Vercamp (#20) could start on any other team in the region. He will help as he gain confidence. He's not just a cigar player.

You make excellent points. I have said forever that depth is vastly over rated in high school, barring extended injuries. Also agree that McDonald does so many other things besides scoring that the casual fan doesn't notice. It is a lot easier to run the break when you big man can rebound , spin out, and lead the break. He is a great passer and really sees the floor well.

Game is at NCC. They ought to explore the possibility of holding the game at NKU.

I would say 5000 is on target easily. Last year at Holmes there was about 3000 and I'm sure many didn't bother for a variety of reasons, but would have made the game if it was at a larger venue.

NCC is running on all cylinders and very early. I hope they dont peak too early. For now, they are rolling teams.

 

That kind of length never really peaks. They will stay in almost every game based purely on the skill in the post both offensively and defensively. You are correct though in that they will need to hit at least 33% of their 3s to keep teams honest, and that ebbs and flows.

Thoroughbreds trample Rebels, 73-33

NewCath's size too much for Boone Co. to handle

 

Another area-ranked boys’ basketball team lost its unbeaten status Tuesday as tall and talented Newport Central Catholic locked down overmatched Boone County, 73-33, with a dominating defensive performance in Florence.

 

NewCath, ranked second in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll, ruled the inside against the eighth-ranked Rebels and changed shot trajectories with twin towers Jake Schulte, a 6-foot-8 senior center, and junior Drew McDonald, a 6-7 forward. Combined with the Thoroughbreds’ perimeter pressure and lane-clogging man-to-man defense, Boone County managed few open looks. NewCath (3-0) gained a running clock with a 50-15 lead on a basket by Zach Pangallo with 4:42 remaining in the third quarter. Pangallo led all scorers with 17 points.

 

Lacking the size of their counterparts, the Rebels (5-1) were pounded on the boards. It added up to another convincing win for the Thoroughbreds, who’ve put a running clock on two of their three opponents by taking a 35-point lead. McDonald and Tanner Moeves added 10 points apiece for the Thoroughbreds. Ben Weyer and Josh Verkamp scored nine each, and Schulte had eight.

 

Much-improved Boone County, 13-16 last season after beating NewCath in the 2012 Ninth Region tournament final, won its first five games by an average margin of 17 points. The Rebels needed 11 games last season to get their fifth win. Boone, regularly putting four and five scorers in double figures to fuel its hot start, had none against the ‘Breds. Junior Brenden Stanley led the Rebels with nine points. Nobody else had more than five. NewCath was active in denying the point guard the ball and surrounding him when he got it.

 

NewCath, top-ranked Holmes (6-0) and third-ranked Covington Catholic (3-0) are the region’s remaining unbeatens.

 

VIEW FROM THE SIDELINE: “You can’t be a good team without good defense, and we work real hard on that all the time,” NewCath coach Ron Dawn said. “We wanted to contest shots and make them work.” Said Boone County coach Greg McQueary: “We didn’t show up, and they got a good team, it’s that simple. You can’t not show up against a team like that.”

 

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Pangallo scored eight of NewCath’s first 29 points. Moeves stopped Stanley from being a factor with excellent defense. “If we stop Stanley, we pretty much stop their team,” Moeves said. “It was my job to limit his touches.”

 

PLAYS OF THE GAME: The ‘Breds scored two pretty first-quarter baskets with Moeves on the passing end while bolting to a 15-0 lead. His bounce pass in the lane to Weyer produced an easy score, making it 10-0. Moeves snared a rebound, sent the outlet to brother Grant Moeves, who passed ahead to Pangallo for a 14-0 lead.

How many does the NCC gym seat? Probably have to be in line by 6 p.m. to get a seat on Feb. 14. Weren't there around 5,000 at NKU for the second Holmes-NCC (regional) game last year?

This team seems to have everything. Their being in the two tourneys plus "All A" will help them and show lots. They could win all three. If they do that, I believe only Holmes will be able to compete in the 9th and I am not sure how well they will do.
