December 5, 201312 yr “Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore, why I will sleep for the eternity.” -Nelson Mandela
December 5, 201312 yr Heard it in passing. Talk about influential people!! Thought the exact same thing when I read about his passing. He left quite a legacy behind. RIP
December 5, 201312 yr Everybody knew it was coming but still a sad day. RIP to one of the giants of humanity.
December 6, 201312 yr I saw a link to Ted Cruz's Facebook page where he left a very nice status update about Mandela and his Facebook comments lit up like a Christmas tree with his supporters saying they lost respect for him and that Mandela was a terrorist and he killed kids and he and his wife tortured people..... What did I miss? When did this happen? I thought Mandela was in jail for 27 years and helped end apartheid in South Africa. Why did Ted Cruz's supporters lose their minds on Ted Cruz and his appreciation of Mandela? Other than the obvious answer.
December 6, 201312 yr ^ There's no end to what people think about Mandela. His passing was likely viewed a little differently in the Netherlands than in a lot of places around the world. The people who hated Mandela in life took no end of grief. Heck, Ronald Reagan's own party broke with him on treatment of South Africa and a bipartisan effort put into place the economic sanctions that led to the end of apartheid. Reagan put the Cold War ahead of all other things and since the National Party in RSA was staunchly anti-communist in the face of what was admittedly a big communist problem across the entire African continent, he stood beside them even though he shouldn't have. That's all because, despite not being a communist, Mandela was branded a communist by the racialist South African government and prosecuted under their "Suppression of Communism Act" which was almost always used to suppress civil rights activism rather than actual communism. But there's no denying that Mandela was a revolutionary and that's something that's bound to attract its fair share of dislike.
December 6, 201312 yr Thanks Getslow. I gained a ton of respect for Ted Cruz once I saw what his supporters were saying to him. Blew my mind.
December 6, 201312 yr Thanks Getslow. I gained a ton of respect for Ted Cruz once I saw what his supporters were saying to him. Blew my mind. I haven't verified it but I read a tweet that said former Sen Rick Santorum compared Mr Mandel's fight against apartheid with the R's fight agaisnt Obamacare. Please tell me there was a whole lot of context missing.

Please tell me there was a whole lot of context missing. 2:20 mark starts the conversation. I'll just say it was a very poor analogy ON THE DAY the man died.

Why did Ted Cruz's supporters lose their minds on Ted Cruz and his appreciation of Mandela? Other than the obvious answer. I didn't know any of this until an acquaintance of mine (a frustratingly close-minded, far-right wing acquaintance) emailed this to me. Assuming this is true, I would guess this is what Cruz's supporters were hanging their hats on: PJ Lifestyle » Raining on the Nelson Mandela Parade
December 6, 201312 yr Thanks Getslow. I gained a ton of respect for Ted Cruz once I saw what his supporters were saying to him. Blew my mind. You can find those reaction just about anywhere. I was reading through the comment section on a magazine's page on Mandela's passing and it was unhinged. It didn't take too long to find strong endorsements of South African apartheid. I just read one about how Mandela/SA had been laying plans for some type of white genocide. Someone said yesterday that Mandela was evidence that the world could be united, that he was liked by all. I rolled my eyes. I think it's true that it's become taboo to criticize Mandela or the anti-apartheid movement he symbolizes, so it's not surprising that someone like Cruz would offer measured praise of Mandela. But, there were certainly people who despised him and what he represented during the pinnacle of his eminence. I think some of that carries over to now when you find places where people can speak freely without the fear of social taboo or controversy, like comment sections on the internet. The same is true of the American civil rights movement.
December 6, 201312 yr It just kind of caught me off guard because I had never heard bad things about Mandela before. Let alone that "he's a commie terrorist and so was his wife." I was trying to figure out if I should paint this rock I have been living under for so long. Facebook has been one Mandela quote after another. I keep waiting for somebody to call me out for eulogizing Paul Walker and not Mandela.
December 6, 201312 yr We often hear "race isn't an issue anymore" in America. Then I read comments made and I realize we're living in a fantasy land.
December 6, 201312 yr Matt Jones @KySportsRadio 23m John Calipari is making all the UK Players write a 1 page paper on Nelson Mandela. I would love to read those
