Trade Phillips for whatever you can get, sign Choo with that money, move Billy Hamilton to 2B. By all accounts, Hamilton was a very good defensive SS in the minors so he should be able to play 2B.

October 22, 201312 yr Here are some comments I found online about Hamilton's defense as a SS: Prospect Instinct | Billy Hamilton, SS Cincinnati Reds | Baseball Instinct - Do You Have It? His defense at SS is questionable due to a below average arm but he’s a good defender and could handle SS or 2B long term. Coming into the season I said that Hamilton’s defense was questionable but that he could stick at SS. I don’t believe that to be the case any longer. His defense is questionable but there is little chance that he sticks at SS. He’s already begun to make the transition to 2B and it should be a full time move in 2012. His arm is average at best, but it’s his throwing mechanics that make it such a problem at SS. With his speed he’ll still have enough range to handle 2B and his arm will fit better there. Prospect of the Day: Billy Hamilton, SS, Cincinnati Reds - Minor League Ball Defense has been an issue. His range up the middle plays well, but his arm and hands are marginal for shortstop and he needs to do a better job with routine plays. Many scouts think he'll wind up at second base and he did play 55 games there in 2010, although he's been a full-time shortstop since. It makes sense to leave him at short as long as possible to see how much he improves, but even as a second baseman (or an outfielder), his disruptive speed and improving on-base skills would be highly intriguing. Bottom line - he might be able to play 2B but it would be a big drop off from Phillips. From the defensive side, he could be a positive in CF and average at best at 2B.
