Pretty much nothing because of the awful contracts of Phillips and Votto. If they want to add much of anything they need to do it through a trade or by freeing up money by a trade. Thus, Phillips has to be dealt.

They have to spend some money. Taking on Chapman isn't going to be a huge hit to their budget. I'm sure he would have a huge Cuban following.

 

Sure, but they aren't going to take on a terrible contract to an aging second baseman for a slugger like Stanton who is under team control until 2017. They've proven over and over that they will trade their stars as they approach free agency but they trade them for high level prospects like Hanley Ramirez or Anibal Sanchez. You're not getting them to take on Phillips contract when they aren't close to being a contender or even Chapman's given that they won't have control over him any longer than Stanton. If you want to include Cingrani, Hamilton or both in the deal they'd probably talk and try to spin Phillips for prospects.

Do you see what kind of return middle relievers/setup men get when they're dealt to contending teams down the stretch? Once every 10 years or so you'll get a prospect that becomes a career major league starter. You aren't getting a big bat for that poopoo platter--especially if you are asking the other team to take on Phillips contract in the deal. You might be able to swing a deal for another bad contract at another position, say someone like Eithier or Werth, but would that really help anything?

Agreed, Phillips would not be even considered in the trade for him.

I wonder if the Yankees would consider Phillips....Probably going to have to replace Cano, and they most likely wouldn't be afraid of his contract. Maybe a couple mid-level prospects? :idunno:

 

I like the idea of signing Infante (or at least trying to) if they can deal BP.

Hate to keep banging MTGL's drum, but he's right about quid pro quo contract trades. There just aren't any. BP brings prospects, and likely not much more. Not sure if that's the route everyone here thinks they should go, but they're not trading BP straight up for a big bat. So, with that said, does anyone want to package a SP and someone else on the roster for that big bat?

To answer your question, yes. I would be willing to package Chapman and Cingrani or Chapman and Bailey if it meant bringing in a big bat. I think they have the depth on the staff to replace a guy. If injuries happen, they could be in a tight spot, but the same can be said for about 97% of the rest of the league when it comes to pitching.

Like I said in the Dusty will be fired thread, BP will be shopped and shopped hard; it isn't a matter of if. Finding a dance partner for that $50 million is another issue, but if they find a sucker, errr, a dance partner, it will be for single A rosin bags. Period.

 

Bailey is the one to keep an eye on in terms of brining something back. Since the Reds can't and won't be able to carry a $10 million #3 starter, and Homer is approaching that with each arbitration, that is the one that could bring some value.

 

I'll be interested to see if Price pushes to make Chappy a starter when he is the boss -- I doubt it, but I'm interested to see how that unfolds.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but did I not read a few posts that indicated Dat Dude was a problem in the clubhouse? I watched MLBTV about 2 hours ago and a talking head was analysing a Red's trade involving BP and the talking head said "he is a great guy to have in the clughouse."
