The real reason Coach Wirth scored the final TD against Ryle

Featured Replies

So was 3rd down or 4th?

Ryle had zero or one timeouts?

What was the time left on the clock when the TD was scored?

Conflicting information in this thread that would determine what I think would be the proper call. Could someone please give the correct answers to the above questions

TD happened on 3rd down with 25 seconds left. If you listen to the broadcast you hear both the radio guys AND the PA announcer both say "3rd down" before Sam takes the next carry. I assume both were correct on it being 3rd down. Play clock is 25 seconds. They could have kneed it on 3rd down. By the time the officials set the clock and put the 25 into motion the play clock would have been under 25. No need to take another snap.

Then based on this, the V formation was in order. Nothing more to say.

Even taking Clyde's timeline into account........WHY IS THIS EVEN AN ARGUMENT? Even if there was 5 seconds on the clock and they "punched it in" big deal. You play till the final horn sounds. This is much to do about nothing IMO.

Disagree.

Both teams play to the final horn. Running a play instead of taking a knee gives the defense an opportunity to strip the ball, force a turnover, and return it for a win. Taking a knee ends the game and your opponent can not win.

True......however all I'm saying is that if they want to run a play and do score, more power to them.

BTW.....how in the world to you "butcher" my quote? :lol2: Need a Mod to fix a quote.

Listening to the broadcast you hear the PA announcer say Ryle is out of timeouts.

TD was scored with 25 seconds left from the 1.

I would have instructed my team to take a knee. But to paraphrase a statement that Clyde has used in the past. My next high school football coaching victory will be my first.

Paraphrasing here, the plan was to take a knee but the chart Coach Wirth uses for guidance said they couldn't run out the clock. Additionally, Ryle already had one quick strike in the game so Coach Wirth decided to run his offense and score.

Ahhhhh, the ole chart thingy.

I wonder if the chart showed the upcoming weeks football schedule and when he flipped his coin to make his decision it told him to call it a season...LOL

You do know those charts are multiple choice with 3 of the 4 answers being wrong. :thumb:

Really. I have heard of coaches having a 2 pt. conversion chart that they will consult. I didn't know that we now have "when to take a knee versus run a play " charts.

BTW, me thinks he needs a new chart. I liked the "psyche" idea better than the chart guidance explanation.

Yes there are charts you look at that tell you compared to time outs if you can run out the clock. There are of course of options to taking a knee to run out the clock like qb sweep and he falls down before contact.

19-17 game and a team runs a play and scores and people are up in arms. Up 30 or so I can see it a little. Do people feel that slighted because they lost by 8-9 points instead of 2?

Not sure who you think is up in arms over this.

Simple discussion about the philosophy to take a knee or not.

Well that's all that we needed to know. At that point it would be up to Ryle to stop the score and get the ball back. All of the banter in the other thread lead me to believe they could run out the clock.

It was this statement that gave me the impression people were sensitive about it. The portion referring to banter.

Trust me malachicrunch does nothave a dog in this fight nor did his beloved team get beat.

I believe like Stinky stated, just discussing different philosophies on how to end a game and I agree with both of them on this one that it was a stoooooopid move.

Who were the two teams playing again? See it doesn't matter.....:thumb:

Ok...my opinion has changed a little with this updated info. IF CCH could have took a knee and run out the clock, then that's probably what the coach should have done. Simply because running a play brings in the chance of something bad happening rather than just taking a knee and ensuring victory. By running a play the coach has not ensured victory until the outcome of that play is determined, and the outcome does have a chance, even if just a small one, of going against you. Again, this is based on the updated info that CCH COULD have run the clock out by taking a knee. IF that was the case, seems like to me it's a bad coaching decision to try and run another play. Taking a knee, NOTHING bad can happen and you win. Run a play, SEVERAL bad things can happen and you bring losing into the equation.

In this case I am the messenger, I told everyone nearly word for word what Coach Wirth told me.

The psyche speculation was purely my own and taking it a step further maybe the last score was for the psyche of Coach Wirth more than anything. Either way, I am still okay with the TD.

I still don't understand the concern about a team winning a game by two scores. Is this just a carry over of "everyone gets a trophy" not wanting the players to get scored on?
