It was this statement that gave me the impression people were sensitive about it. The portion referring to banter.

 

I couldn't care less if they scored. I was pointing out that a poor coaching decision was made pertaining to strategy. Actually if they were up two scores, the coach at least doesn't jeopardize losing the game by running a play.

I don't know if I phrased things poorly, if people aren't reading things or a combination of it all. I will attempt to clear this up.

 

I made a comment about people being up in arms about Wirth running a play up by 2 pts because I read malachicrunch's post talking about "all the banter in the other thread". I never said anything about him (malachicrunch) being up in arms or upset over it at all. The quote from malachicrunch made it sound as if other people were sensitive about it. Once again I never said anything about him being sensitive about it or having an issue.

 

stinkyboy II quoted me and stated "Not sure who you think is up in arms over this." I used the quote to explain why I was under the impression people were upset about it.

If you go to page 7 of the above there is a chart that tells you by number of timeouts how much time you can run off the clock. Yes team do use these charts and/or do the math quickly in their heads but a chart helps prevent mistakes.

 

Depending on the amount of time left a team can run off time without running a play. From the details of the game it appears as if CCH did not need to run a play. According to some Coach Wirth thought he had to run a play to run out the clock. There is a simple solution when it comes down to these types of cases where you can get the benefits of running a play without snapping the ball. The clock must be running though for this to work. The offense runs the clock down to 2 sec left on the play clock and then someone false starts. The play is never run and the ball is reset. the clock starts on the ready and the offense gets another 25 sec to run off the clock. You can run off to close to 50 sec or so off the clock doing this.

For what it is worth, on our play sheet every week, I have a chart for when we can start taking a knee, depending on how many timeouts our opponent has and if it is after change of possession or first down. To me, that chart is very important. So important, I carry it in my billfold just in case I would not have it on the play sheet or something happen to it.

 

I have never carried with me the 2 point chart. To me, if it is early, we don't chase points. Late, we do.

 

My point is, to me, the take a knee chart is a big deal. Remember the Herm Edwards fumble return for a TD in the Meadowlands? I would feel awful to cost my kids a win after they had already secured it with their performance on the field.

Still don't see a problem with it no matter which info is correct. If the coach did not think they could run out the time (and that really is all that matters) then his decsion was a no brainer. Weird things happen on both sides of the ball, but I would never want to give the ball back because weirder things happen more often when the offense has the ball and can score. Happens every week somewhere at all levels.

If you are up by less than 8, I see no problem with punching another one in, even if you could run out the clock.
