10 Things Americans Waste Money On

Featured Replies

I am of your grandparents generation and I find the amount of consumer debt carried by many to be disasterous. I paid for all my kids to go to a Ramsay seminar. Money well spent. His premise is don't spend what you don't have. When you have it, he doesn't mind you spending it. And to Bengal: my daughter was a hard sell, too. She got older and wiser after learning the hard way.

He ain't lying about the baby clothes! It is ridiculous what they charge for something that your child will out grow in less than a month! Personally I just go to Burlington and get stuff that is half the price of Kohls and about a quarter of the price of carters or any other baby store.

Consignment sales are big in WKY. They have weekends that people sell their clothes and other baby stuff.

Coffee.

I drink coffee like Jack Reacher.

But not so much Starbucks. The gas station kind and my Kuerig.

Bottled water by the caseloads (why? I don't know.)

Um, no your not. And I hope the seminar he puts out helps folks. But Lord have mercy, did a generation of people grow up with zero common sense? Sure his instruction is solid for the most part but people act as if he has the golden egg. It's basic fiscal common sense. I just don't get it. I should start a series if seminars about the importance of brushing teeth. Go over the simple pitfalls and trendy things to avoid. I could make a killing because it's evident we have raised up a generation of folks who need a (fill in the blank) for dummies book for things I thought were once elementary. I don't want to sound offensive, because that's not my intention. I guess somewhere I should have been born in the century before where you had to use your noodle, not google. We pay someone to spoon feed us common sense, I guess I just don't get it.

Been a while since I've listened to Dave's radio show, but he basically acknowledges everything you've said when his show begins. "Welcome to the Dave Ramsey show...we give you the same advice your Grandma would, only we keep our teeth in."

If you listen to his show, you will see how he appeals to the scared masses who have become immobilized by debt. It's about showing people how to climb out of the hole, one shovel full at a time. He gives them hope and confidence that they can do it.

Same here. I spend at least $200 a week on groceries. We don't eat out much and I cook a big meal every day. That is one thing I don't hold back on, we eat well.....:lol2:

I am not guilty of any of those things. He is also against credit cards, in general, even if you pay them off and do not pay any interest. He says you will buy things you wouldn't normally buy. I do not agree. I have a credit card for which I receive points. I get money back with these points. Therefore the things I buy actually cost me less. And I don't buy things I wouldn't normally buy,

Take a look around. Too many people don't. If a person is at the point that they follow every thing that Ramsey says, chances are that they didn't have the discipline they needed and need someone to follow.

Booze

Cigars

Coffee

Newspaper

Cable TV- hate Time Warner and such a waste of money. If it werent for sports and my 7 yr old it would be gone and I would live off Netflix and Hulu.

Cut those out and my life just got a lot more boring. All okay to me in moderation...the newspaper is about to get the boot for good this time though. We have a Keuric machine and my wife buys Starbuck grounds and we brew at home but I have been a sucker and paid $4.50 for a Mocha now and then.

Well, can you really enjoy your mani and pedi w/out a Mocha? If your friends read this....:ohbrother:

Yes, but to Spin's point, it is because a generation grew up w/out fiscal common sense. For those crippled by debt out of their control (see medical bills) I feel for them.

Agreed. It is not that much different than a person that has become obese and turns to a fitness or nutrition expert for help.

Overeating is like overspending.

No exercise plan is like so savings plan.

Both are common sense things.

But in both cases people can get to a point of despair and can't see the forest through the trees, so they seek help.

I agree. Discipline and common sense is really all you need to do well in life. I fell like I am of average intelligence +, but I have a boatload of discipline and common sense. Because of this I was able to retire at 50. You can teach discipline, but I am not sure about common sense.

I enjoy Ramsey. I have read one of his books and it helped me out. Those of you dismissing it outright is silly to me. If you say it's common sense that's fine, but not all of the teachings are common sense. The debt stacking was helpful and I still try and use some of the principles taught in the book.

As for the list provided, I am innocent of most of them, but the cable tv I pay a hefty price for.

I assume you lump me in there, and that's fine. I'm not poopoo-ing Ramsey's ideals. And I don't disagree that he has some helpful tips and theory regardless how elementary I think they may be. And I also understand that people struggle with things, and money management is one of them. But I'd like to see what the financial guru spends his disposable income on. He has substantial income from his frugal advisory biz, so wonder what his spreadsheet looks like. I suppose lists like this just irk me. I don't want to sound as if I don't subscribe to the methods he professes.
