Curt Schilling was on ESPN this morning taking Hannigan and Dusty to task for not coming out to get Cueto to relax. He said it was obvious he was overthrowing on every pitch yet no one came out to tell him that he was.

 

I posted it from the start. They had to recognize it.

Seeing as how Latos started on Wednesday, so his elbow issue should've been known then or on the off-day, I probably would've adjusted the rotation and moved Homer back to the WC game.

 

Even starting Cueto, he should've been done after the 2nd inning. It was clear he was throwing BP up there.

 

 

The Reds' strategy was to try to win the weekend series and get the home field. If that's the strategy you can't sit Homer.

Should Reds fans really be surprised that the team wasn't prepared or ready last night?

 

Dusty's history:

Giants: Crap the bed with a 3-2 series lead in the WS against the Angels (had I believe a 5-0 lead in the 7th inning of game 6).

Cubs: Crap all over themselves blowing a huge lead in game six of the NLCS after the Bartman incident.

Reds: 2010 - Crap down their leg against Roy Halladay and the Phillies, getting no-hit and swept in the process.

2012 - Have a 2 game to none lead against the Giants heading home, needing to win 1 of the final 3, and choke it away.

2013 - Have a shot at not only hosting the WC game, but an outside shot at winning the division, and crap themselves losing the last 5 regular season games (all at home), and getting steam-rolled in the WC game.

I don't know what to make of Dusty. On the one hand, I see him as a good manager. He's taken three teams to the postseason & had some success there, though not in Cincinnati. On the other hand, he makes some really questionable decisions & seems to stubborn at times.

 

If Dusty comes back, I won't be upset. If they can him, I won't be upset either.

That's kind of where I am. There's a lot of me that feels this way, be careful what you wish for. But like everyone else, I'm curious to know if the grass is greener.

 

I'll say this, it's a players game. I refuse to lay 100% of the blame on someone that didn't throw one pitch, field one ball or have one at-bat. Of course, decisions made or not made impact the outcome but at the end of the day the players get it done...or not.

Before I say this let me say that I for one am not a fan of Dusty Baker and never have been. I think he's a terrible manager that makes awful decisions and worries more about making players happy rather than doing what right for the team to win. With that said, does a manager really need to do all that much to get a fairly veteran team that now has 3 years of postseason experience ready to play a playoff game? I figured after losing 5 strait that some of the veterans would have stepped up and got this team fired up for last night. All i saw was a lack of focus, a MAJOR lack of energy, a lack of hustle, and idk if im the only one that saw this, but the Reds almost looked intimidated during this game. Some of that may fall on the manager, but 90% of it i believe falls on the players.

 

And i also ask the question, are any of these guys leaders? Votto doesn't seem to be, Phillips is all about Phillips, Cozart isn't, Bruce doesn't seem to be a leader. Is there anybody in there besides Fraz and Latos that lead and show a little enthusiasm to be playing the game?

Its also worth adding that yesterday at one point they were talking about Votto telling reporters, "I am not going to go after a pitch just to drive in a run" (not verbatim) and then in todays paper they have Cueto saying along the lines of, "ya that's just baseball, but thank god im healthy". I wanted to climb through my TV and slap Cueto when they showed him laughing in the dugout after getting pulled. This team quit plain and simple. They had no desire at all to be playing still.
