Other than some silly penalties, the Birds played a very good game today. Offense was clicking from the opening drive. I think the starters punted 1 time and turned it over on downs in their last drive (where some subs were starting to enter the game). Every other possession ended in the end zone.

 

I particularly liked Houliston's block for Harris on his last TD. Logic tells you not to let him do that, but you just cannot take the competitive spirit out of a leader like that.

 

OL did good work opening holes for the running game and given Houliston lots of time on most pass plays.

 

Also, in most every instance (Hoge, Harris, Hergott, etc.) when contact was about to happen, the offensive player was initiating the contact. Always better to be the "hammer" than the "nail," even when you are on offense.

 

The D played very well and flew to the ball aggressively and finished most tackles. Once it was clear that the backup QB for CCH did not have the experience to throw over the defense (mainly screens & draws), the safeties were playing downhill. Those are 3 players (Urlage, Abner and Wrobleski) that you do not want running "downhill" if you happen to have the ball OR are soon getting the ball. They will make you remember them.

 

Great to see Braden Hicks (SR) w/ an interception. So many of the DEF line in the HHS defensive scheme get little or no attention. They simply do the hard work in the trenches occupying 5 or 6 blockers with 3 or 4 players so that the other 7 or 8 defenders can fly to the ball and make plays. Truly a team effort and they all deserve recognition.

Zach Harris had a huge but quiet game and anybody that doesnt think DBob isn't or should not be a leading candkidate for Mr. Football is ignorant about talent imo...

Couldn't agree more! Kid is sick! And just because he waited for his turn, it should not be a factor. That should actually make him more attractive! How many kids (these days) wait their turn? He got it all. Good kid, good character, and a stud athlete!

Last I checked you still have Elder on you schedule and if you don't think that is a challenge you are out of your mind.

 

Pretty sure he means in the district race, then playoffs. Elder is just a late season reminder to the team that they're not invincible.

In the grand scheme of things, the Elder game doesn't mean much. The goal is always a state championship.

The focus of the season is CCH not JH or PT.

 

The results from those games should not be seen as anything but working to prepare for CCH. HHS is playing a lot of guys this year more than in the past and they are trying to improve their quality of depth. Playing JH and PT allows the coaching staff time to see how some players will perform against good athletes.

 

You comment about Oscar Mayer Bologna is somewhat valid in that every current class seems to be the best class per some.

 

However there is something to the concept that each team is build on the foundation of the ones before it.

Earlier this season I questioned the legitimacy of the height and weight listed for Beau Hoge. Egg on my face. That kid shot up and got thicker. #7 caught a pass in the middle of the field and turned around and instead of trying to dart/juke he simply decided to steamroll the LB/DB. I said "who is that?" Stunned to hear it was Hoge.
