What the Heck is going on here : reference 2A football

Featured Replies

I'm disoriented and confused when it comes to 2A football. I'd sure hate to be a voter in the 2A poll this week with all that's happening right now. At least your Top 3 is pretty clear with Desales, Caldwell Co and CAL. Those 3 have somewhat separated themselves, but, even here, there's a lot to debate about what order to put them in. Caldwell came into the season with lofty expectations, a sure fire D1 QB and a plethora of talent from a 2012 runnerup season and they've done nothing to disappoint. Desales, arguably have been more impressive with big early season wins over John Hardin and Warren Central and then this weeks thumping of previously undefeated and #4 ranked Bardstown. CAL has quietly gone undefeated and looks to have the best defense in all of 2A and could make a legit argument that they deserve some consideration for that #1 spot, too.

Outside of these 3, we've got last weeks #4 Bardstown, coming off a 50-7 loss. #5 Glasgow is a week removed from a lopsided loss to another unranked 2a team. #6 Middlesboro just took it on the chin by 31 to a 1a team, #7 NCC did manage to win this week against a decent, but, unranked 2a team, but, not really impressively. Murray, at #8, had a bye week, but, at 2-3 on the season, do they deserve to move up? OB Catholic, at #9, beat a decent at best Butler team, but, was far from dominant. #10 Union Co did win big, but, are they really that good or the beneficiary of a weak schedule?

Throw in W.Verona, Somerset and maybe even Danville, Prestonsburg and Ballard Memorial and you have 5 teams knocking on the door, but, also 5 teams with some ugly losses or unimpressive wins and what have you really got?

It just appears to me you have a Top 3 and then you could pretty much throw them in a hat from 4 to 15 and wouldn't get much grief. Early in the year, I made the statement that 2A was as strong and deep a class as any, but, now I'm beginning to think it's a 3 horse race littered in with a bunch of other pretty mediocre teams.

It should still be pretty entertaining as parity will do that for you, but, is it quality parity or just parity? That is the real question.

Can't wait to see how the rankings look this week as there should be plenty of controversy and postering among the fanbases regardless how it shakes out.

Caldwell has took care of what is in front of them, and done so in a convincing manner. As they say on Fridays, forks up, boys, it's time to eat.

I said last week that Caldwell is clearly #1, but not by as large of a gap as many believe. After that you can make an argument for any of the next 8 teams being in any order.

There are a lot of teams in contention this year for a shot at making the finals but I would not say it is a particularly strong class. In the past few years there was basically a couple of contenders from the East and a couple from the West with the East being the better side. This year the West side is better and has the top contenders and the East is more open than it has been in a long while.

DeSales has arguably been the most impressive team in the state to this point in the season.

I agree. Their schedule so for this seaon is by far better than Caldwell's. You can say all day that Caldwell is playing what is in front of them but they knew when they made the schedules that the Tigers were going to be good. Why not test themselves more so they know what they need to work on.

Caldwell scheduled Christian Co, who's typically really strong. They also have Mayfield and Ft Campbell on there schedule, 2 more typically strong teams and Trigg Co is an annual rival, who's been good in some years, not so good in others, Union Co is a top 10 team this year and then Murray in there own district is always good. The schedule is plenty challenging, just not as good as Desales is to this point.

I would have Desales slightly ahead of Caldwell just based on body of work so far and SOS. But that is probably a coin flip.

If Caldwell wins district they have home field throughout the playoffs, is that correct?

I think CC will win state rather easily. They seem to be the class of 2A this year to me..

2A is no different than the other 5. No depth in any. CCH with a JV QB went on the road and handled a top 10 6A team. They're all bad in that regard.

O'Cath gets their best running back and then he breaks his leg in the Butler Co. game. Don't know now if OC going to get it back. Might be the worse string of bad luck with injuries I have heard or seen a team endure. I can see 3 players out, but 7 starters out at one time? WOW! Especially 3 of them were LB's.

Indeed. If my Tigers take care of business in the regular season, the west side of the playoffs go through Tiger Stadium in Princeton, and the Tiger's Den is a terrible place to be for opponents on a Friday night.

Walton Verona should be in the top ten now.
