Funny how the Braves just happen to run into so many jerks. I can think of one common denominator in all of these stories, two of which come in less than a months time.

I believe Joe Strauss said it best, by saying something like the problem isn't us Braves, you (Braves) are always the common denominator.

 

Gomez erratic, crazy, etc... yes. But, McCann didn't need to step out in front of the plate. At that point you're not protecting your pitcher, just let him go to the dugout and do whatever it is he does. McCann seems like a tool, but hey JMO.

Which ones? Policing the base paths? There is some disconnect in the clubhouse this year I will give you that, but few teams have had stronger chemistry in 2010 and 2012 in my opinion.

I thought Gomez did well considering. That was the third time Mahlom had hit him, and he thought he'd beaned him on purpose, and he said all he could do was hit it out on him (he could have charged the mound, but the homer was sweeter). You could see them jawing at him as he was going around the bases, and McCann shouldn't have blocked the plate. His apology seemed contrite and sincere, but you could tell he was still emotional over it. With that said, IIRC, I think Gomez gets hit a lot, so maybe he was in the wrong there. Hard to say.

FWIW, just listened to the Around the Horn podcast pertaining to the fight and 3 of the 4 panelists said the Braves were at fault. Tim Cowlishaw was the lone dissenter and his argument was so weak he laughed at himself and was the first one gone from the show as well.

 

Points that were made:

 

The Braves have appointed themselves the police of the unwritten rules of baseball. Why?

 

The Braves are in the playoffs and the Brewers are garbage. Why stoop to their level.

 

No need at all for McCann to act the way he did and he should have been tossed for his actions.

 

Gomez has been hit multiple times by Maholm and was sucker punched by Reed Johnson. But Gomez is the bad guy for admiring a homer off the guy who keeps plucking him?

 

Had the Braves been the bigger men Gomez would have looked like an idiot all by his lonesome. Instead we all see Maholm, Freeman and McCann all being just as big of an idiot.

 

Reed Johnson should be suspended for at least 10 games.

I still enjoy Around the Horn and Pardon the Interruption when it is Tony and Wilbon. I also enjoy Bill Simmons. I like Reali,Blackistone, Bob Ryan, Jackie McMullan, Woody Paige, Bomani Jones, Michael Smith....I do enjoy Around the Horn. I like the differing opinions and the plethora of points being made about a story. I'd love to be on Around the Horn.

Anyway, with Around The Horn I get their points but IMO they are not really accurate. I see in no way how those actions make Freeman or Maholm look like idiots, I can see what they are saying about McCann but again, it's inaccurate.

 

 

Also, that show is the first I've seen that put fault on the Braves. the Baseball Tonight crew, and the MLB network crew both blamed Gomez.

 

 

But to each their own and they have their own opinions on how the incident happened and interpret it different ways.

I saw Johnson use both hands to push Gomez back and then immediately they were separated by a couple Brewers. Plus, Gomez saw him coming so there was no sneak up behind you attack by Johnson. Johnson was the only guy who did more than run his mouth and he is the one getting blasted on here. :idunno:

Everyone here is 100% certain based on a video with one or two angles that he sucker punched Gomez and then pulled Terry Pendleton in front of him to keep from getting hit.

I said he pushed Gomez and it looked like one hand got up close to his face. I never said punched, at least I don't think I did.

 

However, his cowardice after the push was glaring.

You missed the part where I said it was my opinion. McCann strikes me as a tool, doesn't mean he's a bad player I just think it wasn't his duty or burden to block the plate. His actions prove he was looking for confrontation--if he doesn't block the plate chances are Carlos goes to the dugout. If baseball needed base path police they would hire them.
