Top 8 make the playoffs: Looks like some are going to need wins over KY teams and then need those KY teams to win.

That is incorrect. The top 16 make the playoffs in 2 regions: North and South. It is a completely different than prior years.

Region 2 (South) is made up of teams from Columbus South to the Ohio River. It obviously includes Dayton and Cincinnati. There are 37 teams in this region and again, the top 16 make the playoffs with the top 8 hosting a home game in round 1. The Regional "Final" will effectively be the State Semi-final.

Below are the rankings through the first 4 weeks of the season. After week 10, the final rankings will be released and the 16-team tourny will begin in a 1 v 16, 2 v 15, 3 v 14, etc. format.

Cards fan has the new format nailed, as one would expect.

Thing about the Harbin's is they are like reading a novel. The story takes time to develop. Week one of the Harbin release is exciting/anxious to fans, but really mean very little.

Most, and by most, I mean the vast vast majority of the teams in contention for berths or top seeds control their own destiny. It will all play out in the next six weeks.

On Kentucky's impact. Sycamore likely scheduled Ryle figuring they would get more second level points than they will get. Won't cost them a playoff berth (barring a key injury) but will affect their seed.

Colerain may have anticipated more second level points from Trinity than they will get but, it won't affect them in the least. Whether they finish first, fourth, or eighth in the region nobody wants to play them come playoff time.

It is now much easier for the GCL South teams to make the top 16. That is why I was disappointed that St. Xavier and Elder declined to schedule Trinity.

A good friend of mine from college used to coach at Centerville. That place is SERIOUS about football.

In KY we have teams that go 0-10 and make the playoffs, and everyone boos.

In OH they have teams that go 10-0 or 9-1 and dont make playoffs, and everyone loves it.

I guess maybe we are talking to different people, because I don't think I have ever met an Ohio High School Football fan that likes the Ohio playoff format.

Then why havent they dont anything to change it?

No team has ever gone 10-0 and not made the playoffs. And since the playoffs moved to the Harbin system in the early 70's, you can count on one hand the number of one-loss teams that did not qualify.

In 2009, Colerain went 8-2, swept their conference and did NOT make the playoffs. Very disappointing as we were scoreboard watching the final weekend. If just one of our defeated opponents had won one more game, we would have been in.

That's like asking why didn't Edward Smith just heed the iceburg warnings and turn sooner?

The OHSAA is a massive governing body. To make any change would take years of committee meetings and school buy-ins. Right now the focus has been on finding a better balance to the public/private issue.

Also, there are historical conferences in the state that trump district/regions in KY. In OH, winning the Greater Catholic League-South is more important than making the playoffs.

Just the way it is.

Funny, KHSAA sends out a survey every few years about what the schools want for playoffs, schools respond, BOC acts on response. Doesn't seem so hard.

Can't seem to find it through Google, but maybe you can. I'm pretty sure that East Clinton back in '88 or '89 went 10-0, but didn't make the playoffs. (I could be wrong, though...that's been awhile ago!)

I may be wrong but I believe Newcomerstown went 10-0 and did not make the playoffs.

I am one of the biggest Ohio high school fans I know(lol) and I like the system. It does need some tweaking, but I like the fact that team must earn their way in.
