Ohio does have 700+ teams. They could shorten their regular season by two weeks and let everyone in. Indiana shortens their season by one game to allow everyone in.

I started this topic to show how often and 10-0 teams can miss it by playing a weak non-league schedule.

 

The 2nd time it happened to Newcomerstown, they had bad luck. Their three non-league games plus their league record any other year would have put them in. The three non-league teams all had down years, that as I recall nobody seen coming.

9-1 -10-0 not making playoffs - Yappi Sports

The teams that were 10-0 that didn't make the playoffs were at a time when only 4 teams made the playoffs. I am pretty certain since they move to 8 teams up through last year there isn't a single team that has gone undefeated and did not make the playoffs.

 

However, it has clearly happened historically.

In 2009, Colerain went 8-2, swept their conference and did NOT make the playoffs. Very disappointing as we were scoreboard watching the final weekend. If just one of our defeated opponents had won one more game, we would have been in.

More than a few 10-0 teams failed to make the playoffs over the years, including Withrow at some point.

 

And since the Harbin's became the playoff system, there were many year's you could count on one hand EACH year how many one loss teams failed to make the playoffs. Harbin's started with two teams from each region advancing, and it was that way through the 70's. Lots of one loss teams stayed home. Even in the four team system, one loss teams were in peril depending on their schedule.

 

The eight team format eliminated almost all of this. The current format will as well. But, historically, that was the problem with the Harbin system. It wasn't the system it was the number of teams that qualified.

I guess maybe we are talking to different people, because I don't think I have ever met an Ohio High School Football fan that likes the Ohio playoff format.

I guess you could call me a fan of Ohio high school football, and I like the system just fine. Given the number of teams in the state, the only alternative would be to shorten the regular season. I actually think it's the best system possible for the state, given the number of schools.

 

If you go 6-4 against average competition and don't make the playoffs, I guess you weren't good enough. Life lesson learned. This isn't the YMCA where everyone wins and we all have orange slices after the game.
