Seriously the average person that reads that story across the country will think that Highlands must be really bad. So bad that when the local (Lexington) paper needed a quote from a coach from the perspective of getting blown out they went to this poor coach since he must have a lot of experience getting blown out. That's what 99% of the people reading that article across the country will think. Even though it is far from the reality.

Exactly. See it in the schools all the time. Do nothing to support the gifted and talented, but prop up the average or below-average to ridiculous levels.

 

We had a situation in NKYFL where one squad's first string would be benched by the mercy rule no later than early 2nd quarter, week after week. Should the coach have been penalized if his second string was the next best team in the division that year, and routinely putting up 20 of their own when they took the field?? They were scout team, tackling dummies all week against bigger, faster, stronger kids and then they should not get to play because it hurts the other boys' feelings? Come on, Man!!

I will say this, if I go to work and beat the dog snot out of my competition not only are they not fining me but they are giving me MORE money. This is not how the real world works. Your boss doesn't tell you to scale it back so the competition feels better about themselves.

 

With that said, before varsity sports there should be a much higher level of sportsmanship. Once you are a 17/18 year old and getting ready to go into the real world, you need to be prepared for it.

I think in this country we are at the "everyone gets a trophy" status, sad in my opinion.

Not to threadjack, but this is spot on. And much of the blame lies in the trend away from leveling.

 

Back to the topic at hand.

The problem with running up the score in youth league is the failure of the league to divide the teams properly. There is no downside to having competitive teams with competitive games every time. Plus "Daddy Coach Ditka" who is living the dream and thinks its all about him will not be as easily able to do it.

What I mean by divide the teams is this......

If there are 4 teams in a league then the 4 best running backs should all be on different teams. The 4 best linebackers, the 4 best qb, etc..
