Unarmed man shot by police in North Carolina

Featured Replies

This young man wrecked his car at 2:30 in the morning. Ran to a house for help and startled the occupant of the house. The occupant called the police. When the police arrived he ran to the police for help. They fired the taser at him and it didn't stop him. He was then shot 10 times by a cop and died. He was unarmed but toxicology reports are not back yet. The officer has been charged with voluntary manslaughter.

Based on what I have read so far I am torn on this case as I am in all cases involving cops and unarmed civilians that end up dead. In my amateur opinion it seems like the young man was on something. Not sure what all took place but if I wreck my car and I am lucid enough to go to the nearest house and vigorously bang on the door for help then I will be lucid enough to follow orders when the cops arrive before they had to tase me. Let alone after I run through the taser. If I am innocent, which is how this story makes this man out to be then I would have no problems with following the orders of the police. Especially if I am in need of help.

There has to be more to this story.

The story I read on it, said the taser gun malfunctioned, and never actually fired.

That would explain why he kept coming towards them after they fired the taser.

Did it have any other details? Do you have that link? This link is the first one I have seen. I've seen pictures and comments about it on Facebook but this link was the first informative piece I had seen on it.

Why would the cop not shoot someone acting crazy running at him at that time of night, have you all seen the news lately and what kind of people now inhabit the earth.

And that is why I am torn. I don't know that we shouldn't expect our cops to react in some kind of way. Should they have shot him 10 times? I don't know. However, based on the story I have seen so far I can't say I blame the cop. Doesn't make it right. I'm just saying I can see why he shot him.

I agree, but 10 times, dang man, people dont shoot bears that many times.

Cops have to be able to defend themselves, they have a life also and probably family at home. This day and time they have a very dangerous job, no clue to what they may run into sometimes.

PP, the article I read was on CNN yesterday. It's since be amended, as there appears to be video of the encounter.

This part disturbs me....Attorney Chris Chestnut says that's when something went terribly wrong. And he says Ferrell's family members watched a police video on Monday that shows it.

Chestnut says the video, filmed from the dashboard of one of the police cruisers on scene, shows a clearly unarmed Ferrell moving forward toward police with his hands out, then panicking as two laser beams hit the center of his chest.

"Then he gets excited, and he's like -- 'wait, wait, wait' -- and he's coming forward saying, 'stop,' and he goes off camera, and you just hear shots. One, two, three, four...pause...one, two, three, four, five, six...pause. One, two."

He could easily have been injured in the accident rather than on something. I think the 12 shots to a clearly unarmed man when no other officer even pulled his weapon brought the charge.

From the article, the accident was so bad he apparantly had to climb out through the shattered back windshield...Wouldn't surprise me at all if he was concussed or disoriented.

Shoot until the threat is eliminated. You get that adrenaline flowing and I could imagine how quickly you can go through a clip. Just sad either which way, a young mans life is lost and now an officer is going to have to live with that and whatever other consequences he may face for the rest of his life.

Actually the way the police video portrayed it with the audio, there were some pauses and then some more shots fired.

Hey Hatz...off subject but just noticed you are in Martinsville...I grew up just across the border in Eden. Was just in Martinsville a few weeks ago, got me some bbq at the Checkered Pig. Pretty good stuff.

I think I read the officer was charged very quickly after the shooting, got to believe they think he acted improperly for him to have been arrested so quickly and charged.

Possibly. Also could have been impacted by the way the Trayvon Martin case was handled by the police.

If there's a video then that should answer a lot of questions.
