A win vs St. X would be pretty substantial this year. Outside of Trinity, who in the last 3 years has a "statement win?" Everyone seems to be beating teams than they are better than, and no real big upset has happened since what Highlands v. St. X in 2009?

 

I think a win vs X this year would do more in the eyes of most b/c the team is expected to be better than the previous 2 years. 2011 was a "down" year. 2012 not so much. X was beating bg by 10 at the half in bg last season and for them to come back and win, ignoring other factors says a lot.

 

At the end of the day, the recognition is great for the state, so congrats to the purples.

When you start a thread and say you believe 25 teams in Ohio could beat Bowling Green, then there is nothing anyone can say that will change your mind. I don't know if the rankings are correct, but it's pretty obvious that most people in our own state don't believe them. If we were to break the consecutive win record for Kentucky, it would be a fluke, because we didn't play a national schedule. We can't afford to play a national schedule! Let's just say, that we will play anybody we can afford. We will just keep beating whoever is in front of us. I believe the Purples have as much right to be ranked nationally as anybody in our state.

High School football teams have different players every year. How can someone say they aren't deserving and when they say those things they look back at the team several years ago to clarify their argument. These teams had an entire different corp of players back then. There isn't a single player on BG this year that played on the team when they were in HHS class etc. So who is to say BG would get embarrassed by Highlands or Cov Cath now? I don't, I actually think they would beat those teams.

 

This isn't the NFL where players play on a team for 10 years. This is High School Football, the stars on this years team were sophomores when they beat St X who apparently was "Down" that year. 5A may be a weak class according to the OP of this thread, yet the team that lost to BG beat every 6A team they played last year.....yet it is still a weak class.

 

I don't get it, do you need to win 6 state titles in a row before being considered a good team? That makes no sense because it is an entirely different team the 6th title won than it was with the 1st title won. Not a single player played on both teams. This thread confuses me.

 

The so called weak class of 5A last year, or as the author states "Terrible class" had teams that beat every team in other classes they played such as CCH etc. If 5A last year was considered a weak class, what class in the state isn't considered weak? Class 6A had numerous teams that lost to 5A teams last year. Class 4A had several teams that lost to 5A teams last year. Class 2A had their state champions get embarrassed in their scrimmage against a bad Cooper team...a 5A team.

There is no way for MaxPreps to justify the ranking and no one here has been able to do it either.

So basically if BG beats St. X....again.....3rd time in a row.....they defeated yet another below average team? Does that mean the only time St. X is above average is when they defeat BG or Trinity? Nobody else defeats St. X but when BG does they are 'below average'?

 

Also the CovCath and LexCath teams that embarrassed BG are considered two of those programs finer teams and Highlands started their unprecedented run of 6 straight titles with a victory over BG in BG's 3rd straight trip to the finals. This version of BG and last year as well are considered two of BG's finest teams ever. Cycles happen. Doesn't mean the recognition and respect isn't deserved.

I am glad you brought that up, in 2011 X lost to Riverdale (TN) by 14, BG by 8, Moeller (OH) by 11, Trinity by 5 touchdowns twice, they only beat Central by 1 in OT and Manual by 7. To the plus, X did beat Cincy X by 4 points but looking at X's body of work BG beating them by 8 was hardly something a national power would do. A national power would have beat X by 5 touchdowns.

You are right, a single game against the only decent team on their schedule (speaking nationally because that is what this whole issue revolves around) that overall had a terrible year by X standards.

 

How do you explain last year?
