Freshman girl attempts to crack varsity roster at offensive line

Featured Replies

Gender boundaries in high school football are slowly becoming a thing of the past.

Girls have thrived at place kicker on numerous teams, and last year, Erin DiMeglio took reps at quarterback at South Plantation.

Count Michaela Malloy as another pioneer for girls playing pigskin, as the 14-year-old attempts to make the varsity squad at McCann Tech (North Adams, Mass.) as a freshman playing on the offensive line, a position traditionally dominated by the biggest, heaviest, most physical boys on a team.

According to the North Adams Transcript, this is Malloy's fourth season of playing football, which she learned from her father, who taught her proper blocking technique.

"I just like the contact sports," Malloy told the North Adams Transcript. "I'm really not a girly-girl."

I know of another girl that played little league football and was one of the hardest hitters on that team so this is my question, do girls need to play boy sports? Should they be allowed to play Boy Sports? Guys can't play girls sports except Band/Cheerleading.

IMO no, girls should not be playing football with boys at the high school level. Little league is different; most boys and girls are still about the same size/strength so girls can hold their own. Once you get into high school and start hitting the weights, boys develop into much bigger, stronger athletes. Again, JMO!

Lawildcat whats your take on female wrestlers in high school? Im curious.

I just can't see a girl being an effective offensive lineman at the high school level. Physics are just against it.

I am of the same opinion when it comes to any full contact sports. Guys are just stronger.

I actually know a guy over in Delhi whose daughter used to play football and wrestle and used to win a lot of matches but eventually, like I said, the boys started to develop into stronger opponents and she couldn't keep up.

Watched a Mayfield Middle VS Murray Middle game last week and the starting 8th grade RB was a girl. I was shocked and said to a Murray friend with me, who had a son playing left tackle, that I was afraid she would get hurt. The next play she got drilled and was hurt but came back a series later and finished the game taking the same shots their other backs took and the Tigers were getting drilled. While she pretty much hung with them I think it is dangerous as girls bodies are not the same and I would think more vulnerable to injury

My sons wrestled middle school and one school had 3 or 4 girls out. My younger son tried to pin his female opponent without touching her below the shoulder or above the knees. If it weren't so embarrassing to him, it would have been comical. He won but was not happy. His brother wrestled another girl, pinned her as fast as possible and got the heck out of there. I raised them to respect girls and protect them whenever possible.

Same season, my oldest wrestled high school and there was a girl at Meade Co. at JV state who was very, very good. It just so happened that her first match was the last one in the bracket and she wound up beating her opponent on the only mat in action whereas every earlier bout had six or eight matches running simultaneously. The crowd erupted in support of her and the boy she beat was humiliated. It was painful to watch...because if you lost, you lost to a GIRL and if you won, so what, you beat a GIRL.

No way would my daughter wrestle or play football if I had one.

If she is good enough let her play.

If she is good enough let her play.

I'm all for letting girls play if they want. I just can't see them competing very well with the boys unless it is a very low level of high school football.

I say no, it is a boys team. If we do allow it, should we allow boys to play on girls volleyball teams if they don't offer the boys version of that sport at the school?

That's why I said "if she is good enough." Gender is immaterial.

South Kenton Peewee team has a girl on it and she is very good. She plays outside linebacker and tight end. I have seen her make plenty of tackles in the backfield.

Is she already getting D-1 looks?
