Conner at Beechwood (8-16) Scrimmage

Featured Replies

Beechwood will be hosting the Conner Cougars on Friday night for a scrimmage. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 but don't be late. Whenever both teams are ready, they will probably go ahead and start. It is a good chance to see the best QB in the state and one of the best in the nation (Conner's Drew Barker) and one of the up and coming QB's in the area (Beechwood sophomore Drew Fieger). It should be entertaining.

This should be a very good scrimmage. Good test for both teams.

Will be curious to see how well BW defends the pass, obviously Barker can sling it around the yard, just want to see how well they stack up. It will be a barometer of how well they might play against Mayfield and their outstanding QB.

Two teams facing similar obstacles in preparing for the season. Both teams lost talented skill players (Nussbaum, Fogle). Both teams are rebuilding their offensive lines. Both teams are solid at QB. It should be a good one. Our first chance to see the new faces in action and see how these teams are shaping up.

If Conner is going to win a state title they should "win" this scrimmage with Beechwood in fairly convincing manner.

I believe start time is now 7 pm.

I am staying home now. I was informed yesterday that scrimmages were meaningless.

Scrimmages are meaningless (or meaningful) depending on who wins.

No one said scrimmages are meaningless.

Roman Empire seems to give them little credit.

No. He said using the final score as a barometer is meaningless. I agree. Coaches approach scrimmages differently.

What's the format of this scrimmage? Regular or 10 plays for each team?

In the past it has been two 30 minute running clock halfs.

No. He said results. You are equating results with final scores. Results can mean many things. Are my new guys what I expected? Is my defense reading the sets of the opponents? Is my QB going through the progressions that we practice? And on and on and on. To me, those results are very meaningful.

Let's say Drew Barker lights up BW. Does that by itself tell me anything about BW? No. I'd have to have a bunch of questions answered. Did they have everyone healthy? Did they have new guys playing D? What positions? Did they run a base set? Did they scout Conner? Did they play their best 11 or did they run a bunch of guys in to see who can play?

Way too many questions. Score is 100% irrelevant unless both coaches say before the game that they're playing to win , everyone is healthy, and they are using the full playbook.

Which I disagree with. I understand that the final score isn't a statement that one team is better than the other. But play in a scrimmage along with the score is an indication of how the teams might match up in a real game. If one team beats another in a scrimmage, it tells me they have a good chance of beating them in a real game. So it isn't meaningless.
