New "Redbook" rules for KHSAA sports

Featured Replies

Just some of the highlights -

Schools cannot pay for coaches to go to Sweet 16, tickets, travel, rooms, etc.

Coaches cannot use school funds to by coaching shirts or attire.

Fundraisers are a whole new ballgame - if anyone plays a game of chance - like at fall festival or even a cake walk - you must have a gaming license.

Going to be interesting.

Just one man's opinion, but some of those rules are ridiculous. Schools will make adjustments to get around them, and it probably won't be too hard at that....

I have been through the meetings and it is crazy.

The idea or the meetings?

Should they have ever paid for this?

I always thought some of those split the pot drawings were rigged or easily could be. A lot of equipment companies will throw in some coaches shirts, etc. with other purchases, so actually no one is paying for them.

Not as much as you might think. I'm involved with a school and a youth program and have seen close to $50k in equipment purchased and there haven't been very many freebies, and certainly not enough to outfit a whole staff. And over the years, the paid coaches have chipped in some of their stipend to cover costs of gear for non paid staff.

One other big thing that has gone away is the KHSAA coaches passes that get coaches into any regular season event.

I assume there is a difference between booster funds and school funds. If so, then these seem appropriate.

Schools paying for travel to events not directly related to actual team or official duties seems reasonable.

Coaches attire is like uniforms - so it seems it would come out of booster funds as well.

And game of chance fundraisers have always had to have a non-profit gaming licence. At least for things like "Casino nights" or Texas hold-em tournaments. I am not sure about raffles or 50/50s. But the big events always should have a license.

It would seem this is good for schools who are facing tighter and tigher budgets. Maybe they just wanted KHSAA to be the bad guy for uniform enforcement vs. school by school policy.

So what has changed here? I have material interest in this for upcoming communications on early season bowl.

Here is a link that seems to be the new Redbook:

http://education.ky.gov/districts/FinRept/Documents/Redbook%20FAQ.doc

The coaches cards for free admission are KHSCA I believe.

khsca.org - KHSCA Benefits

"A KHSCA membership card honored throughout the state for free admissions to high school athletic events as well as some college events"

So it still seems to be intact.

Have to pay? No.

If you have the funds and it is not putting a strain on your program......why not. You are there networking and watching games.

It cant be paid for out of general school activity fees. Coaches use these cards to get into games to scout. They bring back scouting reports, therefore that money is directly filtering back to kids. You take stuff away from coaches who are already working for sweat shop wages. This was a valued part of coaching for many, how many people at KDE have ever coached a game?

Amen! Nobody coaches to get rich but it's nice to know you can go watch a game during your bye week or can go watch your school in a road game in another sport. I'm sure many fuss because of lost gate due to coaches cards, but without cards you'll lose attendance and concession money. Everybody loses!

You send teachers all over the country to learn how to become a better teachers. What is the difference, other than the coaches paying for the trip out of their own activity account. Coaches can learn a lot by watching basketball at the highest level.

As a person who had to be involved in the Ky Gaming Commission when it first became legal to operate gaming in Ky (I co-chaired our Parish Bingo) you bet you had to have a license for any game of chance and that includes just plain old split the pots and even the smallest raffle. If you run a game of chance, you need a license!
