Newport Central Catholic or Highlands?

Many people think that I'm a HHS hater. Quite the opposite, being one of the top football programs in the state of KY, I am very proud when their name is recognized throughout the country. I have a great deal of respect for what they have done.

I also feel the same way about NCC football. They don't have quite the resume HHS has, but what they have been able to do in the last 13 years is pretty amazing.

Here's my opinion on deciding to play football at either school. You can't go wrong with either program. The difference is, if you choose to play at NCC, you will play as a sophomore and maybe even as a freshman. At HHS, you might not even play as a senior.

As for the other sports, at least in the last few years, NCC has been more dominant.

Both are excellent football programs. You are choosing between the two probably based on family tradition. Either way, you won't go wrong based on situation I'm sure.

Who says you will not play as a sophomore or maybe even as a frosh at HHS? There were numerous sophomores that saw significant playing time last year and in the years prior to that. In fact you had a frosh letter just last year. I am with Teddy here in that family really decides where a kid may or may not go. Some cannot afford the tuition to attend a parochial school and thus will attend the public school in their area. I do not believe that decisions are really made to play at either school based on the football program or any athletic program for that matter in about 99% of the cases. Yes NCC has had Highlands number in basketball, but in the other sports I would say that HHS has more than held their own.

Good point about playing time. I guess it would depend on what you want out of your high school sports as an athlete. If you aren't good enough to get much playing time in your 4 years if you go to HHS, do you want to go just to be a part of one of the best teams in the state along with the history etc. Or would you rather get some playing time by going to NCC, and possibly be a part on the field of a state championship?

I mean if it's just to get a ring, either school gives you a great opportunity to get one, but only one may afford you the opportunity of actually playing in that championship game.

Anyway you look at it you can't go wrong with either, athletically or academically.

Also, at NCC you won't have parents complaining about out of district kids playing in front of their kid. Trust me, would make me mad if my son came up through the ft Thomas football league to only have some kid from another town play in front of him when they got to high school.

If you have you kids go to one school or the other ONLY for the reason of sports IMO you are an awful parent. Yes I love sports and played year round my entire life, but there is more to selecting a school than sports. You find a school that provides the best fit for your child to grow, learn as much as possible, and become the best young adult that they can be.

Playing for a smaller school will also allow athletes to play both offense and defense in most situations. I know that Highlands have very few players that play both while NCC would not typically not have enough numbers to platoon the O & D.

Other thoughts:

Although NCC has a nice fan base and support system for their football, not much compares to a Friday night in Ft. Thomas for a home football game.

I agree that both schools have strong family ties and the decision on which school to attend is made well before football playing considerations come into play for most students.

I'm not sure that I would agree that HHS has "more than held their own" recently vs. NCC in other sports. I would need to see some records to be convinced of that. HHS prevailed in baseball tournament this year but that's about all I can remember recently. My perception would be that the results have been pretty lopsided recently in the sports not beginning with "Foot"

But that's only because there's no such thing. I would say a comparable thing to Out-of-District at NCC is a Non-Catholic coming in. I know they have plenty of those and I also know that parents complain about them. I have heard it first-hand from a NCC Co-Worker. Whether its out of disctrict kids, new kids or non-traditional kids, every school has parent bitching about kids playing in front of theirs. If you don't see it, then you simply don't want to see it or hear it.

And not have coaches that look to put themselves before the team wherever and whenever they have the opportunity. I would bet that more kids get to play at HHS than get to play at NCC on a Friday night and that is not talking about blowouts. HHS two platoons which at a minimum involves 22 kids. Add in backups and subs for various packages and you can likely double that which would now be 44. Add in the fact that Dale and crew like to have many of the younger kids play special teams and you are looking at getting anywhere from 55 to 60 kids in a game. That is more than NCC currently has on their roster. Sure they do not play every down of every game, but they are getting to play and not standing on the sidelines as some would like to imply. And I do agree with Kentucky Joe in that there are parents complaining no matter what school, what sport or what gender.

Interesting. Have you heard parents of Highlands players making those complaints?

I've been around Highlands a long, long time (the benefit of being old I guess). During those years, I've heard one set of parents complain about the out of district players. Ironically enough, their son's playing time was limited by a Ft. Thomas kid and not by an out of district kid (their kid still did get to play a lot just wasn't the superstar that his parents thought he should be).

If my either of my sons had gotten beat out by some kid from another town, I'd have told them that they are learning a valuable lesson in life that will serve them well when they get into the business world. Nothing is guaranteed and if they want that promotion, they have to out think, out work and out smart the competition. If they do work as hard as possible and they still don't get the promotion, unfortunately that's life. It's not always a bed of roses.

But my sons didn't have to hear that speech. They worked really hard, became pretty decent football players and as a result started their junior and senior years. The competition made them better football players. They learned that success isn't given to them, it is earned.

Actually a great benefit of the two platoon system and the heavy rotation system at Highlands is that if you work real hard to become a good football player, you will see the field a whole lot at Highlands.

As JOAT pointed out, in the Highlands system, a lot of sophomores either start or play a whole lot of minutes because the system is dependent on having a lot of good football players available and Dale and Brian don't care whether those good football players are senior, juniors or sophomores.

So your calling zack Harris and Tyler swietzers parents awful parents? Not to mention, probably half the football teams parents. Shame on you for that.

Saying these boys went to Highlands only because of football is ridiculous.

NC is too good a school to be embarrassed like this. Remember, your words are seen state-wide and beyond. Carl Foster used to say, "You are better than that."

Another classy post calling out high school kids by name. All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!

With each post he displays more and more of his ignorance in all things HHS. Ignore him, he's not worth it.
