September 2, 201412 yr Yes, I've used several different things and Roku 3 is the best I've come across for what I use it for. Roku 3 has USB port so I use it by plugging in a external HD that has all my DVDs digitially stored on so I can watch them on any of my tv's Having a USB port, makes it even more compelling. I got my daughter the HDMI stick simply because of the cost. Honestly, she hasn't watched regular tv in over a year.
September 2, 201412 yr I bought my daughter a Roku for her apartment at college. She loves it. If I could for sure have access to all the sports I watch, I'd probably cut my satellite. Even so, I'm strongly considering it....the $130/month I pay could be much better spent elsewhere. Live sporting events are basically the only thing keeping cable/satellite dominate. They will fight not to let it all of that platform.

The usb port is the only reason I went with the Roku 3 It's great. I don't use the device the same as everyone else does, but it does give me the option to watch Netflix etc. if I choose to, I just never have through Roku yet because I already have Netflix on my smart tv.

I use an app on Roku to play music from my computer through the stereo, but I would prefer just plugging in a hard-drive as long as it was easy to use and navigate.

As long as you have them in a format that it works with which is most of the formats for video's btw. I have mine in mp4 format or m4v Works great. I was using WD hardware originally to do this but it stopped working about 3 months into using it, used roku 3 ever since and works great. I did this because I had over 200 DVD's and I wanted a way to watch them on any TV, so I copied them all into digital format and placed them on an external 2TB hard drive and plug that HD into the Roku via usb and it works great! No lag at all like you would have if you streamed the movies from a media server over your homes wi-fi.

It lets me sort through my music library by artist, song, playlist, search, or whatever. Everything about it is perfect for what I'm looking for. But, it has a lot of bugs. I don't even bother with it much because it gets to be such a headache. I'm very intrigued by the USB/external HD feature on the newer Roku. My only other question is whether the Roku will organize the files in the hard-drive folder to make it easy to search and browse. If so, sold. Edited September 2, 201412 yr by Habib

But if you are an Amazon Prime member there is nothing that compares to the Firetv. They were giving away a years subscription with purchase last I checked. Speed of Firetv and the search function is unmatched for the time being. Apple TV is disappointing. ( Disclaimer I think most apple products of the last 3-4 years have been disappointing )
