1 A school's schedules?

Featured Replies

Looking at the Mayfield schedule got me to thinking. I think I am correct in saying that outside their district games that they have to play, EVERY non-district game is against larger classification schools, with 3 of those games against 6A competition and one of them against 3A Paducah Tilghman, a perianal powerhouse and always very talented.

How many other 1A schools load up against bigger schools and play that kind of competition? And even for the ones that might, not just play them but the majority of the time beat them as well? Now, of course I wouldn't expect a doormat 1A team to put together such a schedule, but it definitely seems Mayfield is always willing to take on about anybody. I know where I went to high school, 1A teams just were not expected to compete with 4A schools (1, 2, 3 and 4A classification in NC at that time) and I can't really remember matchups like that every happening.

Beechwood does about the same thing. A lot of the really good small schools have to play bigger schools to get competition in their games.

As JD said, I think most of the top small schools play similarly tough schedules. This year Beechwood plays the two previous 2A champs, 2 4A schools (including Cov Cath), 5A Franklin Co. and 2 6A sized schools. I think 2A New Cath plays all non district games against 5A/6A schools plus Beechwood. Frankfort I believe plays a similar out of district schedule against all bigger schools including several 4A or higher.

Raceland plays up in all non-district games.

Yes, and this season may very well be the toughest schedule in school history. Raceland has always played tough schedules but as coach Maynard said, some may think that he has lost his mind with this one, lol.

In fairness to the situation, if Mayfield wants to play a school of similar size in Kentucky they have to drive 3-4 hours, so most smaller schools end up playing up in class. I would say it is rare for teams in Kentucky to play other teams in Kentucky within their same classification. With 4 classes it was possible, but very difficult now. Though even before the current reclassification Mayfield has always scheduled incredibly well always playing Tilghman, Hoptown, or other border schools that are traditionally strong.

Frankfort has over the last 5-6 years played all non-dsitrict games against upper classes. The season no different.

Bullitt East - 5A

Green Co - 2A

Franklin County - 5A

Danville - 2 A

LCA - 2A

Western Hills - 3A

Shelby County - 4A

Correct!!! Every year they, as well as Beechwood, play up......and win as well. This year no different for the Breds.

I agree bug and in reality, how many other 1A schools are willing to play Mayfield? In WKY none will unless forced. In addition, we have a policy of not playing a school in our class that we could potentially meet in the post season. Bw has also always played up big time. Beyond that I think Frank does some but not many others do so to the level that these do. As mentioned, Raceland is this year but they have not consistently done so. I also think I read several others beefed it up in the east recently.

I think outside of the very top teams, most 1A schools only do so when they feel they have a strong team. Just my opinion, but that is how I see it

Raceland hardly ever plays an out of district 1A school. The last two years, we have played Pikeville, but that is not very common. We don't have any 6A schools in the area, but we normally play 3A, 4A, and 5A schools.
