July 17, 201313 yr Because food stamps go to both the unemployed and the underemployed, I wasn't really that surprised. My grandparents were on foodstamps. My grandfather had a great job with Bond Bread which was a division of General Bakery. Management/Union fighting lead to the company going belly up. This was before ERISA protected pensions/retirements so when your employer went bankrupt, so did your pension/retirement. He hated being on government aid but when you get kicked out of high school your Freshman year for punching a Xavieran Brother at St. X, your job prospects are not that great. No that is not why I did not go to St. X. Social Security, foodstamps and a part time job at Convenient Food Mart he could walk to for all but the last few years of his life kept he and my grandmother going fairly comfortable I guess. Even if he had his full pension, he probably would have still worked in retirement. He was not the type to not work, it would have driven him crazy. That and being at home with my Grandmother 24/7 would have probably also driven him crazy. Lol In all honesty, I really wish most welfare programs were like foodstamps where you were given vouchers rather than cash. If a program(s) were designed to provide Food Stamp similar vouchers for clothing, housing, utilities, healthcare and other needs rather than cash, people's needs would be met but those who really can work but don't want to would probably get tired of not having spending money like they do now and look for work but those who truly cannot work or cannot find work would still have their basic needs met. Food Stamps are vouchers any more. It's put on an EBT card.
July 17, 201313 yr Anyone surprised by anything here? Discuss. (I've always wanted to say that. :lol:) 1 in 7 families surprised me at first, but after thinking about it I guess that's about right. But we all should be absolutely horrified that 1 in 7 families have to or are receiving food stamps. I'm quite sure there is some fraud I those numbers as well. The biggest surprise I saw was only half the families getting them had children. I thought this number would be much much much higher. Why are so many non-children households receiving food stamps? That ratio needs to be explained to me.
July 17, 201313 yr Food Stamps are vouchers any more. It's put on an EBT card. With cards then given to drug dealers in exchange for pills who buy their groceries for the month. Or what really ticks me off they buy soda at walmart take it to a small gas station and exchange the soda for cigarettes.

Now if you include the black marked for food stamps, (ie someone purchases something they are not qualified to receive on foodstamps so they trade double the amount of food stamps to someone with the cash to buy it for them), I think it is much higher than 1%. I lent someone I knew $80 assuming I would probably never see the money again but I felt sorry for this person. A week later a receive a text telling me she has the money to pay me back. Out of curiousity I met her. She handed me her Food Stamp card telling me there as $150 on it I could have. When I handed it back to her she was shocked. It appears this is a very common way to pay for stuff. I really don't want to be arrested for fraud and I know full well a week later she would need the funds on the card for her kids. Unfortunately she is a "live day to day" type and doesn't consider the future when making decisions. Some have said that stores that accept food stamps should require ID first. The problem with that is the same protests for requiring ID for voting would come up. I am sure there is a solution, just not sure what it is.

The City of Louisville I believe is approx 14% Black/African American so it would appear that the Black population receives at a rate similar to the average of the overall population of Louisville. I won't lie, I was a little surprised. I would like to think that my surprise is not due to predjudice/discrimination/racism but rather due to hearing over and over again that black folk do receive food stamps at a higher than average rate and I was duped into believing so. What I can honestly say is that I do often reflect and think are any of my views or decisions racially based and if they are, straighten my butt out and get my thinking correct. I don't claim perfection but I do think I put a very sincere effort to continuously improve.

As a rule nationwide blacks have received food stamps at almost double their population percentage. I would imagine that is where the assumption that they are the cause of the problem came from.
