How Long (in time) is the Optimal Church Service?

Featured Replies

Along with the thread on how often......

How long is the optimal time in length for a Church Service for you?

For me anything past 45 minutes is not necessary and only due to a Priest that has no pace to Mass or rambles on with his sermon.

1 hour.

However, I have heard speakers who I could listen to for hours, but generally speaking I think an hour or so is about right.

I agree with Randy, I've been to revivals that were over way too soon.

For the most part 1 hour is a good range, but I can't remember the last time we got out in less than 1:15

Go to the Saturday 3:00 mass at St. Louis at 8th & Walnut downtown Cincinnati for the "speedy" mass. 3 to 5 minute homily that is concise and to the point, also no singing, so this speeds things along. I'm back at my "palatial" Bellevue Estate before 3:40.

1:00-1:15 is normal if you ask me. However the homeliest is the key. Some are good with a 5 minute or 30 minute homily, while others no matter how long they talk leave you reading the bulletin 10 times over.

3:00 mass today ended at 3:32 and it was packed.

3pm -- Were you there for the Slavic reading?

No. Pure English. It was in the downstairs sanctuary. Saw a lot of NKY people there.

For me, the optimal mass has nothing to do with time. I've been to masses in which 40 minutes felt like it dragged for three hours and in which an hour and a half felt like it was only 45 minutes. If the priest is good and engaging and if the music is well-done, I couldn't care less how long it is.

Our typical late Sunday morning service starts at 11:00 am and is usually over by about 12:15, sometimes earlier, once in a blue moon longer, especially if someone comes down and is saved/baptized then it can go several minutes longer. I'd say average 1-1.25 hours is about right, some days that can seem long, others it can seem short, but I'd say on average it's about right.

I'm either an early morning guy or a Saturday afternoon guy. Going at 11:30 (our church) and getting out at 12:30 to 12:40 is just too late.

We attend one church regularly on Sunday that last 1:00-1:05. We do go to another church sometimes on Saturday night. It usually last 50 at the most and it is a big church.

Count me in as a member of this club.

Anything over 50 minutes is too long. If the homily takes more than 5-10 minutes, you're not getting the message across.

A bit simple IMO. It has nothing to do with time.
