Who will Yasiel Puig grow up to be? - SweetSpot Blog - ESPN

So, my vote is "no". If he's everything that's been advertised, he'll be in many more All-Star games in the years to come. But for now, give it to a veteran who's been having a good year, not just a good month.

The question isn't about whether he'll make more All-Star games or not, the question is given his immense talent and the way he has performed do you pick him because he could help you win the game more than someone like Domonic Brown. Does the winner getting home field advantage in the World Series trump honoring a veteran player?

Based upon that logic, the manager shouldn't be looking at year-to-date performance then. He should only be looking at the past couple of weeks? By that token, then you'd probably say that neither Votto or Phillips deserves to be there at all. I don't buy it.

And the answer is still a resounding no. Hell he's not even the best outfielder on his own team, let alone one of the top 5-6 in the NL. So regardless of how many games he's played or hasn't, the answer is still no, because he's not good enough to make it over those other guys.

Unless Matt Kemp suddenly returns to the player that he was 2 years ago--and given his surgery that isn't likely, Puig is the best outfielder on that team. It will be Eithier and Crawford, not Puig, that loses playing time when all 4 outfielders are healthy. Have you watched him play more than a game or two? He's the most physically gifted player I've seen come into the league since Jr.

Looks like he may have an issue with his left shoulder. Grimaced and grabbed shoulder during BP and winced during second at bat on a swing and a miss. Oh he did hit an almost one handed home run to right on his first at bat.

Interesting stat. His OPS on pitches 1 through 3 is over 1.00. On pitches 4+ it's something like .286 .

3-4 last night with a homer and 2 RBIs. He's now hitting .442 with an OPS of 1.195.

Yes, I've seen him play 6 or 7 times. He's played like 20 games. Stop with the outlandish comparisons. He'll be lucky to be half the player Jr. was.

Everyone of those guys is better than Puig right now.

So he's the 2nd best OF'er on the Dodgers, a 10 game under .500 team. What does that have to do with anything?

AJG, I assume you also think Curtis Granderson and Derek Jeter should be on the AL All Star team this year? I mean, they're clearly two of the best at their positions, so them on the team would give the AL the best chance of winning, right?

Not to speak for Joe but I think his point is that no one is playing better than Puig is right now.

Would the average fan rather see Puig in the All-Star game or one of these guys...

Is the All-Star game Life time achievement award (put veterans ahead of others just because they are veterans) or a representation of the best players in baseball this season? I don't know? I guess it is a mix as many players make it via fan vote just based on popularity.

If he was on the ballot would the fans have voted him on the team? I think overwhelmingly so.

^If the whole point is winning, wouldn't you want the best players possible at their positions on the team? Puig is not one of the best 5-6 outfielders in the NL.

Who's honestly playing better than he is? Not life time but this season who is playing better?

FWIW this conversation pains me a great deal as I have hated the Dodgers and everything about them since I was 9 years old.

This season?

Beltran

CarGo

Cuddyer

Gomez

Braun

Fowler

McCutchen

I'm sorry, but taking a 20 game sample and acting like it's a representation of an entire season is just not realistic IMO.

Even the month of June alone Jay Bruce has more total bases, more runs, more HR, and more RBI.
