How many Frosh does NCC project to have?

Featured Replies

Man, you want to talk about a certain poster getting the wind knocked out of his sails after the most recent facts being unveiled.

Again, I have no issue with Soph playing Frosh level as long as NewCath isn't winning multiple Frosh Championships and overzealous fan/parent is running their mouth about their Hate for their Christian neighbors and so on and so on...Just sayin

I realize that. However, amongst athletes, St. Joes is split evenly b/n NewCath and Brossart in all sports except those who want to play football. The VAST majority go to NewCath. Additionally, with the subdivisions in Wilder being loser to NewCath than Brossart, many of the families send their kids from St. Joes to the Hill. So, if kids from Wilder cross the river, it may not "officially" affect NewCath from a feeder perspective, but it certainly affects NewCath.

You couldn't be more wrong. The VAST go to Brossart.

The VAST majority of kids who like football go to Brossart???? Ok, let me say then, that NewCath gets the disproportionate amount of very good players, because every year some of their best players come from St. Joe's. As to the other sports, unless the trend has changed in the last 3 or 4 years, there was a stretch where the basketball players alternated schools. One class went to Brossart, the next to NewCath.

As for non-athlete students, I would definitely agree w/ you.

Not sure how many boys just graduated from St. Joes but I do know that I coach 5 of them in baseball and 4 are NCC bound and 1 is going to Brossart. 2 of the 4 play football, basketball and baseball and the other 2 play basketball and baseball. The one going to Brossart plays baseball and soccer. Also have 2 St. Peter and Paul kids. 1 going to NCC and the other to Brossart.

New Cath may be heading to 1A the next time they do reclassification.

Less than 100; assume 50 boys; 50 x 4 classes = 200 boys.

That is right at the cut off between 1A and 2A. As a Beechwood fan, I can honestly say it would be awesome to have NCC back in 1A. That rivalry will ramp back up again to where it was 4-5 years ago.

I thought Beechwood was expected to move to 2A in the next alignment.

That is what I've heard as well.

Beechwood projects as the smallest 2A school by the 2012-13 enrollment. If they hold to two year averages like the last several alignments, that will be one of the two years that factors into the 2015 alignment, along with the upcoming 2013-14 year. They had 184 males and Fort Knox has 180. That's where the cut off is currently. Mayfield and Allen Central both jump up into 2A, Crittenden and Bishop Brossart jump back down. If Beechwood desired to stay in 1A, they'll need a slight drop compared with a slight bump by a school like Fort Knox, or Crittenden (179), Bethlehem (178), Bishop Brossart (177), etc.

As for NCC, they have more males in every single class than females, so the total enrollment can be a bit deceiving. They grew in male enrollment year over year at least the last three years, so a drop in enrollment for one year probably won't be enough to drop them to 1A. They had 223 males last year. Assuming a cutoff of 180, they'd need to drop all the way to 137 next year to average that out. That would require a very small freshman class combined with serious declines in enrollment in the three existing classes. Not going to happen. If they experience a downturn, perhaps by 2019 they might drop.

Good news. Beechwood would love to be in 2A. Hopefully those numbers hold up.

Most of the kids go to Brossart. I would say the problem is hardly any of the St Joe kids are playing football like they did in the past. Right now, there are only 2 seniors, 4 juniors (2 transfers from Brossart), sophs?, don't know how many freshman yet. Newcath use to post in the program the grade school where the kids come from, I don't think they do that anymore, it would be nice if they did.

I agree with mex. This isn't a new issue this year. The freshman numbers have been low at NCC the last 3 years. Last year they had to bring a sophomore or two down to field a freshman team in some games.

No sophomores played freshman football last season at ncc. The freshman had 22 kids out for the team. It just so happens that jacob smith was moved up to the varsity level with about 4 games left on the freshman schedule.

Was it two years ago? I seem to recall there being a number of injuries that caused NCC to need to play a sophomore or two on the freshman team. I am thinking it may have been Zenni that played down from sophomore to freshman to help out so that would make it two years ago? I am sure you will know and correct me if I am wrong. I have no problem with NCC doing it. I am sure the coaches were aware and agreed to it. Better to field a team and compete that not have a game.

Yes, do to injuries and only having 16 to start, some sophomores played down. The other teams head coaches were asked before hand to make sure there were no issues. The sophomores that played down were kids that didnt get much jv time.

Thank you. Sorry about mixing up the years. I knew it happened, just mixed up the years. And like I said, I have no problem at all with sophomores playing down when you had to in order to make a game.

What ive found since ive started coaching. The only parents that normally have issues with certain coaching staffs are parents of kids that arent good enough to play. Those are the ones that generally make all the stink. They forget that its high school and not every kid gets to play. The ncc freshman team always has low numbers. In 2010 they only had 18, in 2011 ncc only had 16 and in 2012 they had 22. The problem is, only half those kids can play the game. Last season the small schools got together and excluded ncc from the schedule which forced ncc to play the bigger schools. Every game was competitive but they only won one game against dixie. Numbers played a major role.

So what is the status for this coming year? Are there enough to field a team or will there be a combo frosh/jv team?

From what I'm being told, if their are at least 14 they will play freshman schedule. But you know how that goes. If kids get banged up, then some sophomores may have to play down. I haven't even seen a schedule.
