Kentucky Drivers License - Homeland Security - Facial Recognition Database

Featured Replies

I renewed my drivers license today and got into a discussion with the worker there. In short I learned that as of October 2012 they put a new system in and when your photo is taken it is immediately sent to the Department of Homeland Security. Homeland then gives the worker a yes or no on the photo. A yes means the photo is sufficient for the Homeland Security facial recognition database.

I assume all this is true and again I got it from the worker at the Drivers License Office.

Anyone?

And did you know this?

Good idea? Big Brother? Slippery Slope?

And does posting this put me on the watch list!? LOL

Did not know this.

OK with Idea, they already have my photo anyway. Just using technology to ID me quicker if I blow something up.

Checked, your were already on the watch list.

Seriously this isn't a big deal. Like I said they already have our photo's this just allows them to ID people quicker and possibly save lives by getting someone off of the street sooner.

I know some will BLOW UP at the mere suggestion of this however.

No clue. I just renewed in March. Didn't seem to take any inordinate amount of time if they did. And, I have no problem if they do.

Not a fan.

Not a fan.

Can I ask why? I don't see a big deal with it, just wondering if I'm missing something.

I'm leery of more power being invested into the security state. While this by itself won't have much of an effect on people's lives, I remain skeptical about its potential. Will the government be installing cameras to fully utilize the facial recognition features? Will people's movements be tracked, much like our electronic communications are? Will this information be used for non-security related issues? I realize that sounds like paranoia, but I think we ought to be aware of the power of new security measures, what limits are placed on the government, and how those two mesh. That this seems to have been implemented surreptitiously doesn't aid my comfort.

For one when you sign up for a state issued license why should the federal government have anything to do with it.

I wouldn't call it paranoia after what the DOJ and IRS have done recently.

Homeland Security collecting the data doesn't bother me and for the most part I think it is a good idea. However, I can't help but think like Habib, we are on a very slippery slope here.

I don't have a problem with it but I do think there should be some kind of notice posted for the public to see.

All the more reason to be in favor of it: it will quicken the coming of the revolution! Just kidding (sort of?).

Federal govt probably has told the states that if they don't cooperate, the feds will refuse to provide some grant of some type to the state govt. All the more reason to demand lower federal income taxes. The feds take money from us and they use it as leverage against state govt to force state govt to enforce some fed policy that would never be enacted at the state govt level.
