FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky law enforcement officers are beginning a week of traffic patrols for the Memorial Day holiday focusing on making sure motorists are wearing seat belts.

 

The 2013 "Click It or Ticket" campaign begins Monday and runs through June 2.

 

The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety says Kentucky has an 83% seat belt usage rate. The national rate is 86%.

 

The office says fatalities on Kentucky roadways last year totaled 746, up from 721 in 2011. It says more than half of those killed were not wearing a seat belt.

 

The office awarded more than $96,800 in federal funds to 18 state and local police agencies across Kentucky for the seat belt campaign.

Let me first state that I am a believer of seat belt use and require anyone in the car to wear one. I do however believe that it is a waste of time and resources to dedicate officers to ensure this enforcement. It my opinion this is a way to increase revenue. Couldn't these funds be put to better use solving a crime, investigating a drug ring, or any other criminal activity?

In most cases this extra enforcement is worked by officers after their regular shifts. Departments receive Over-Time Grants to pay officers to focus on this. So this extra enforcement does not take away from other duties.

Agreed.

 

And if it were to increase revenue they'd charge court costs with seatbelt tickets. Currently they do not.

I personally don't think it should be against the law not to wear your seat belt. I always wear mine, but I just think Law Enforcement could use the time they spend on worrying about seat belts in a better way. If you don't wear a seat belt, you run the risk of facing the consequences (non-law enforcement). JMO

I was told by a former prosecuter and current judge who helped right this law, that the main reason this law was created was to give police officers another primary reason to pull someone over. I know I always come off insensitive but I do not think seat belt wearing should be a primary reason to pull a car over. I don't like it.

So you don't support fugitives being found and arrested, you don't support stolen cars being found, you don't support drugs being confiscated that are found during traffic stops, you don't support DUI offenders being taken off of the road?

 

Look, I'm all for smaller government and for government not over reaching. But the stuff some of you are complaining about is ridiculous.
