Oldog....I am 110 percent behind you and JJ on this. IMO it shows me signs of weakness. Chatter is fine, but I've seen some teams that have been mentioned and a few others that really take it to another level. Best way to shut that up is just start beating them and keep pouring it on. The more you pour it on the less talk. This to me shows a bad reflection on the Coach of that team. JMO!!!

 

If you gotta scream and distract an opposing team, then obviously you're not playing good baseball in my opinion. I LOVE chatter in a baseball game that encourages your teammates. Not crap that is detrimental to the opposing team. I was always taught to play with class whether winning or loosing. But again, I'm old school.

I was stunned that coaches allow it at the high school level. I believe it would turn fans away from the game not bring them. Good teams do not have to resort to such tactics. When I said it happened in the college game I'm strictly talking about the bench trying to get in the pitchers head.(not when he is in his wind up) example: kid hits a home run on a hanging curve ball and the bench erupts with a you hang'em and we bang'em. The pitchers that weren't pitching that day were the worst ones for it. Always made me mad when my teammates did it and I was the one taking one in the ribs for it. I played D1college ball about 25 years ago too, and agree, there was some real funny stuff said,mbut it was never obnoxious, or personal. The mindless grunting, and noises that I hear in today's dugouts is just ridiculous. Some teams are worse than others, but every team seems to have elected one particularly loud kid to be the ringleader, and most vocal. Of course when we played that's who would have gotten pegged when he came to the plate and it would have stopped.

That's all I am talking about. It needs to stop when pitcher is in his motion. Smack talk is gonna happen. Watched a game the other night where a pitcher struck out a kid that is headed to college to play baseball, and as the kid is walking off the field the pitcher made a comment to his players "Guess maybe I'm D1 too". Next time up, kid kits one about 380 and trots the bases slowly, and staring at the pitcher. As he hits home plate, "Not yet kid". That's funny, and if the hitter is willing to take one in the ribs I see nothing wrong with it. But the stuff that comes to a crescendo as the pitcher is winding up is bush leage, and I see no place for it. Again, I liken it to the bench standing up and screaming while a basketball player is shooting a free throw. Not allowed, and rightfully so.

Miss those days. I haven't seen a lot of high school games the past couple years (been coaching select) but I think I was talking about something totally different of what went on at some of these high school games. That kind of stuff would drive me nuts to and if I'm pitching someone is wearing a ball.

HHS "chatter" was there when they were 6-25. I don't recall any complaints then.

 

As I said there's a line. Don't cross it and chatter all day.

My teammates chanted "S>O>F>T>B>A>L>L" for me. Beer league, no less.

The most irritating thing to me were the "home cooking " inconsistent umpires and their calling of games this year. Especially during the tournaments around Louisville and Lexington. They seemed to be more obvious this year than they normally are . No wonder some teams are ranked as high as they are when you can have an umpire in your back pocket on your home field half the season.

A lot of people don't understand why this happens. Its not that they are bad officials/umps, its that they dont wamt to irritate their own regions coaches. Officials in every sport will always give favorable calls to their home region team. Yes it's unfair but when the teams play within their own region officiating is never as bad as visiting another region.

Could it also be that each regions' umps has certain ways they call games. I'm pretty sure that the umps get together before each season and discuss the year...."what to concentrate on, what they should focus on a little more , etc, learning fro last year. If not, then they should.

 

So one region could be focusing on balks from the front shoulder of the pitcher, while another on the batter staying in the box, another the lower strike zone......etc.

 

So when a team travels, the other teams in that district/region are used to this, or expect it due to the season....so in some cases, it looks like games are being called differently.

 

 

Except if you go play in Ohio.....then it is just blatant.... :sssh:
