Where is Henry Rodriguez going to play the next 3 years? So you give up a couple pitching "prospects". Stanton is well worth that. Half of you hated the Latos deal when it was made. (Yes I know you didn't spindoc) The Reds have to make this deal if that's all the Marlins would want.

 

I am with you to a certain level. I have no problem including Lutz and Rodriguez. I don't know anything about the closers listed above, but I have no problem including one of them (minor league closers have little value IMO). The starting pitchers are where I balk. However, find me the one that is the either the lowest potential or the furthest away from the majors, and I will think about including him. So as I think this over a little more, I do think I could make this deal as long as we aren't giving up 2 or 3 starters. Stanton is only 23 or 24 and has hit 30+ HR's twice already. At that young age, I can consider the deal with the limits listed above.

You only get so many chances to win a World Series and when you do you take it. The Reds rotation is in great shape with Latos and Leake under team control through 2015, Bailey and Cueto through next season, and Cingrani ready next season. Most of you insist that Chapman is a Cy Young capable starter as well so that's 6 starting pitchers. We're not talking about a 1 season rental here either, you'd have Stanton for the next 3 season. He'd instantly become the second best hitter on the team. He hit 37 homers in 120 games last season in a pitcher's park. He could easily reach 45-50 in GABP, and he's just starting to enter his peak years. He's also an above average outfielder and a decent baserunner. I think any package they come up with would contain Hamilton and Cingrani and if I'm the Reds I'd have to think a little bit harder before I'd do that.

I think I would as well. It would make me think about it a lot harder than the package the writer mentioned but I think I'd still do it. If all they asked for was the package mentioned by the writer I'd make the deal even if Stanton were shelved until July with the hammy.

I think you're confusing Stanton with someone else. He's not a lumbering guy. All of his defensive metrics are above average except for his fielding percentage which is just barely below league average. The lower fielding percentage is a result of his well above average arm. He had 10 outfield assists 2 seasons in a row before runners quit trying to run on him. He's far from being a DH-only type of player.

Having Stanton's bat in the lineup would allow you to look for a good defensive CF, offense would not have to be a priority at that position. Especially is Mesoraco develops into the hitter that he was projected to in the minors. If you need a leadoff hitter at that position bring Choo back.
