April 29, 201313 yr I don't think either of them is going anywhere soon. Cueto is probably not back until June 1 and even then will require a couple of starts not going very many innings. That means a decision does not have to be made until mid-June. And that's if no one else comes up with arm trouble. By mid June it may just sort itself all out. Cueto should be back way before June 1st unless there is a setback. I'd say both will make 2 more starts max.
April 29, 201313 yr He has thrown one session off of a mound and will throw a couple more sessions before even beginning a rehab assignment in the minor leagues. So maybe before June 1 but maybe not.

You and I may want him back but the Big Guy does not sound too optimistic. Fri, 26 Apr 2013 20:40:55 -0700 Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker said Friday, April 26, that SP Johnny Cueto (back) is not close to returning. Come on Frank. Quit posting 3 day old news. Right-hander Johnny Cueto threw 45 pitches in a bullpen session this afternoon. “It was pretty good,” Cueto said. “No pain, nothing.” It was Cueto’s second session off the mound since going on the disabled list April 15 with a right lat strain. “I felt good — strong,” he said. “I threw everything. Breaking balls.” Cueto said he was going to talk to pitching coach Bryan Price about going on a rehab assignment. Reds manager Dusty Baker said the key is how Cueto recovers. “We’ll see how he feels tomorrow,” Baker said. “He went through a pretty extensive bullpen.” Cueto was eligible to come off the DL today. He’ll likely go on the rehab assignment to build his pitch count back up. Bullpen session goes well for Cueto | Cincinnati Reds
April 29, 201313 yr Well that's good news for now. Guess we shall see what happens tomorrow. I would still think that he would be on a strict pitch count in the rehab starts and even still on one when he resumes pitching for the Reds.
April 29, 201313 yr If his pitch "limit" is respectable, I'd just as soon he "rehab" up in the show. I know that goes against the grain, but I think it's stupid if he's nearly game ready.

Only problem with that is you get into your bullpen fast whenever he pitches and if the other starters can't go 7 or 8 innings they get used up real quick. And Marshall is still so-so stamina-wise and Chapman got the dead arm last year. And Sam can't go 3 innings every night.
April 30, 201313 yr I can't think of a single reason for keeping Leake in the rotation with the way Cingrani is pitching.

However, if he can go 80 pithes, get thru 6 then that's solid. I don't think dead arm by Chapman has anything to do with it.

April 30, 201313 yr If guys start to figure him out, you bring Leake back up and allow him to work on those other pitches then. Right now, I think you ride his hot hand until it cools.

Ride him as far as he will take you. Yes he throws a lot of fastballs but he's 6'-4" and linky. He hides the ball well on his delivery and his release point is closer which makes his fastball seem faster because reaction time is cut down on the batter. For me it's a no brainer, leave this kid in the rotation. Bronson Would have twice as many wins if he was battling other teams #5 starters instead of #3's. JMO
May 1, 201313 yr Reds aren't exactly blowing away the division, so you have to go with Cingrani as long as you can. As far as Arroyo goes, I love him. But this "most wins in the NL since '96" jazz means nothing when the facts are he can only get through two turns of the lineup before he starts getting shelled. He needs to be a long reliever.
