April 4, 201313 yr Yesterday I was sitting in the parking lot of my gym sucking down my pre-workout when in pulls the above vehicle. I see the driver place her handicapped placard on her rear view mirror and then exit her vehicle. Only in this case she is in her workout clothes carrying a drink container that would be commonly used during a workout. In other words, I assume she was coming to the gym (there are other activities there) to workout. Here is my question, assuming she was there to workout (normally cardio in that age group if you know what I mean) how could she possibly qualify for handicapped parking privileges?
April 4, 201313 yr Can't speak to her specific instance, since I really don't know her. However, what I HAVE known to happen is that one member of the family may actually qualify for it...however, even when they're not in the vehicle, the other driving members of the family still use the placard. If I had to hazard a guess, it sounds like that was the instance here. Which is not right.

When I hurt my ankle a few years back I had a handicapped pass that I would use if I couldn't find available, non-handicap parking close to the entrance of where I was going. I could walk alright in my air cast, but it was better if I could minimize the amount of walking I did. Maybe it's something similar. Would you consider that abuse?
April 4, 201313 yr Author No I would not consider that abuse. In this case, she looked light on her feet and did not appear to have any physical disability. She even looked dead at me for a couple of seconds. I got the vibe she knew what I was thinking.
April 4, 201313 yr If I were a betting man, I'd say it's abuse. But I'm always the skeptic. Just know there are a lot of people in the world these days that worry about one person, and one person only, and if it means you may have access to a handicap sticker, by all means, use it. I feel bad when I have to use the handicap stall in our work restroom because all other are occupied, even though I know we have no handicapped employees on our floor.
