Totally disagree with the highlighted statement... They get paid to ref a game and should treat it no differently than if they were doing a HS game. Unfortunately, most of the guys they get for the MS games are just there to collect a check.

 

I don't know about the 9th region, but in many regions the inexperienced refs get a lot of the middle school games and use it as a "training ground". Hey, they got to start somewhere and learn the skills needed for the job. Inexperience will most certianly lead to bad/missed calls and uneven flow to some games, but I also don't see people drooling all over themselves to join the refing ranks and call games which is the flip side to the situation. KHSAA is always on the lookout for new blood, unfortunately theres not much there.

I do not believe the assigner has the authority to change the rating system. Any changes would have to be made at the KHSAA level.

There is collusion between coaches, to keep bad officials out. If someone tells you any different, they are lying.

But you didn't comment on the rest of my statement now did you! One of the reasons that no one wants to call the games on the MS level is the moms and dads and the grandparents who scream, holler and act like every game is the finals of the NCAA tourney. Who thinks a pay check is worth all that, week after week after week!

Without a doubt. MS parents are the worst, no comparison.

I think it's actually by the region association. Not every region does it the same. There is a board of 9th region people that would have to approve any changes.

 

Why does the 9th Region have a Board that would have to approve any changes? What are their responsibilities and what do they do? Why not leave it up to the elected association officials and the other officials to make decisions? If the Board calls all the shots, the assigner is just a pawn and really has no authority.

I agree the middle school games are used as a training ground and rightfully so. The ones that are there for the right reasons and take it seriously should be there and it is understandable to miss calls. I am talking about the ones that you can tell when they get there that they would rather be somewhere else and just go thru the motions. If it is a training ground let the middle schools grade them on their performance. I seen some of the bad ones move up to high school games this year and suddenly they are more serious. Take it serious at both levels not just log the hours.

Middle school ball gets a wide range of officials. Some are good and some are not so good. It's not uncommon to see some of the better (varsity) officials working games in November before the HS season opens just to get in shape and more game ready. As the season progresses, you will see less of these guys because of their HS schedule but some of the guys will work MS on their off nights. That leaves the less experienced guys to handle the majority of the MS season. Good or bad, I think these guys do their best. Sometimes, due to the lack of quality play, these games can be more difficult to officiate than HS games. There's kids jumping, sliding and falling all over the place and the parents are acting like complete idiots. Based on my observations, I don't know why anyone would want to officiate MS ball.

A lot. I'm not sure if it's Rolfs or another guy. I was told this one guy does hoops, baseball and maybe softball. 6 figures. It may include assigning AAU games.

I'm telling you what I heard. I thought it pretty ridiculous but my pal told me that was his full time job. Who would have thought this would be someone's full time job?
