I have heard rumblings for awhile. Additionally, I have heard refs complain about the postseason assignments. There is a feeling among some 9th region refs that the head basketball coaches at the power schools collude with the assigner to to determine postseason assignments.

 

Anyone? On either issue?

I havent heard anything, but he did a very poor job of Middle school officials assignments this year IMO.

What exactly constitutes a "good job" by someone who assigns officials to events? Does this same position assign officials for girls bb games also? If officials are disgruntled, that may explain some things I noticed this year in 9th region girls bb officiating.

I doubt it, Fed Ex wouldnt even deliver the crap officials we got this year. And I get its MS basketball, but when we are told, you will get lower level High School officials,......theres no way in hell these guys did any level of high school. There were a few exceptions, actuall one young guy that were ok to good, but most were :poop:

I will say that the 9th region coaches (all of them) vote on basketball officials. Their vote counts for about 70% of the final tally. I don't see how there can be collusion.

The assigner could with his 30% to manipulate the total. In the region where I am at, the assigner gives his points based on if they go to a certain amount of meetings and complete the tests.

The current (former) system is old and needs to change. There has to be another way of evaluating or rating people than the way they do it now. Basketball is difficult because there are so many games and too many people to see. If a coach doesn't see someone who's new(er) and doing very well, is it fair to him/her that they don't know them and rank them lower than Jim Farmer? Hopefully the crew that picks the new assigner will chose someone who is willing to change the current model. Personally, I'd hate to see them hire another 9th region official. Chris was doomed from day one. He went from being one of the guys on Wednesday and the boss on Thursday - bad combination. They need someone from outside their circle to lead them.

The Stripes at least for the boys varsity games did an overall very good job this year IMHO.

 

There were some crews that did the JV and Freshmen games that were lets just say less than stellar but honestly the play of the JV and Frosh players at times can be less than stellar too!

Meetings and tests are the requirements to even be considered for post-season. They do not factor into the score.

Totally disagree with the highlighted statement... They get paid to ref a game and should treat it no differently than if they were doing a HS game. Unfortunately, most of the guys they get for the MS games are just there to collect a check.

I think it's actually by the region association. Not every region does it the same. There is a board of 9th region people that would have to approve any changes.

I believe it is 80/20. The coaches give their ratings which are 80% and the assigner has the final 20%. The assigner uses in-season performance evaluations and other criteria (which I don't know) to come up with his 20%. Then the final rating is tabulated.
