According to this link the assignment of officials for district, regional, and state games is handled by the a commission who's composed of a KHSAA Commissioner and Asst Commissioners.

This is nothing new. You just found about it? I thought everyone knew this. He's had the LLC for several years and it was not created while he was the assigning secretary. Where you trying to go with this?

Meetings and tests are the requirements to even be considered for post-season. They do not factor into the score.

 

They do in our region.

I believe it is 80/20. The coaches give their ratings which are 80% and the assigner has the final 20%. The assigner uses in-season performance evaluations and other criteria (which I don't know) to come up with his 20%. Then the final rating is tabulated.

I dont know the rules but I would assume the coaches are allowed to discuss assignments with the head guy. The top refs probably got the bigger games. You don't want a new or not highly graded ref doing a Holmes/Cov Cath district or regional game or a Cooper/Dixie game or whatever big game is happening. Do a better job on the court and you will get bigger games.

I don't totally disagree that you want the best refereeing the big games. But the problem is is who is to determine what is 'big.' Ask the DIII teams if they think their game is 'big' and they will tell you HECK YES IT IS! To those guys their games are just as important.

 

For instance, if say Holmes plays NCC some random January night this past year, most everyone will say that is a huge game and deserves good officials. But what if at the same time (using this years standings) Ludlow plays Villa Madonna? Which game is 'bigger?' Well most people would tell you NC/Holmes no doubt. But ask the small school guys and they would tell you that the Ludlow/Villa game could likely decide the conference, and it needs good officials.

 

How bout on the same night there is a Ryle/Boone County game, a Bellevue/Dayton game, and a Heritage/Cov Latin game also. Are those games big? You bet they are, because you have big rivalries, big conference/district games, and maybe the only chance for a win for a team all season!

 

Everyone needs the good officials! It needs to be truly random. That is, if a official is deemed in the top 40 for the region (or whatever number they use to determine varsity officials), then they need to placed in a pool, and have a computer totally randomly spit out the assignments. That's the only way it can be fair to everyone.

 

The 'important' games are too subjective... They're all important to those guys out there bustin' their rears for W's....

The 9th has always sent who they consider "top" officials to these big games. A few years ago each school got to submit one or two "marquee" games to Tom Haas and he would put top crews in those games.

I thought overall the referees didn't do a bad job on the varsty level this year, especially in the ninth. But I did have some problems with the JV/Freshmen officials at times. And I understand thats where the guys that are learning are at, but there isn't enough guidance for them or in some cases effort given.

 

Number one, just as in any job that requires a person lift heavy equipment, it needs to be a requirement that these guys can get up and down the floor in a reasonable manner. If you can't run, you can't ref. It's that simple.

 

And two, I really just think the 'lines' of sight need to be emphasized more. Too many times you see a young guy call a foul from under the basket that occurs up top. Now I understand that 'call what you see' is probably emphasized. But what you see if effected by where you are looking, and too many don't understand that.

 

The judgement calls... That's the kinda stuff you learn as you go. But those two things have to be mandated. IMHO.

Alright, I can understand that and agree with it. But outside those games it needs to be totally random. Amongst the qualified top however many that is.

 

I just meant that, if it was being implied that the higher the quality of basketball in general deserves the best officials, which is basically stating that the better teams in the region should always get the best referees, I wholeheartedly disagree with that idea.

Not sure about basketball, but I would thinks its close to the same

 

Baseball he gets $5 per game he schedules so if a team schedules 20 home games the gets $100 say he gets 30+ teams for the summer that's a whopping $3,000 for the summer. maybe a little more maybe a little less...

 

Not even close to 6 figures, maybe 10k+ a year for a whole lot of after hours work.

 

I would hate to think how much per/hr that equates to.......

But you didn't comment on the rest of my statement now did you! One of the reasons that no one wants to call the games on the MS level is the moms and dads and the grandparents who scream, holler and act like every game is the finals of the NCAA tourney. Who thinks a pay check is worth all that, week after week after week!
