Papers are driven by advertising revenue. For various reasons advertising revenue is down and publishers are losing money or barely profitable. Some mornings the Lexington Herald Leader seems more like a newsletter. Its a sign of the times.

 

Newspapers operate with a 20 percent or better profit margin as the goal. In recent years during the recession that dipped down into the 13-14 percent range for many papers. They are not "barely profitable," just a little bit less so than before, and still a lot more so than in many other industries. Cutbacks in executive pay packages would make it so a lot of good people could keep their job, which would in turn improve the quality of their product (anyone notice how many more errors show up in the Courier-Journal since they laid off all their copy editors and transferred the layout duties to Indianapolis?). Companies such as Gannett are destroying the industry and institution of newspapers with their methods, which have made newspapers less reliable, accurate and trustworthy than was previously the case.

 

As far as the mention of them bringing CTR on for Reds coverage: That's a good move for readers in terms of better coverage. But they still skimp in other areas, such as prep sports coverage. Marc Hardin is a freelancer, I think, and not on the full-time staff. From a corporate standpoint it's easy to justify adding CTR as the Enquirer's Reds coverage is probably the most popular single thing in the building, from the readers' standpoint. It's easy to add one salary when you're eliminating 50 others at the same time.

The Enquirer has committed to Rich Skinner that high school sports coverage will get more support. I've seen it the last two days in the paper. We'll see if that continues.

Well, since sports tends to be the best-read section of most major metro newspapers — sports stories regularly splash across the front of Kentucky's two largest papers — it would be unwise to make too many cuts in the area that drives readership. It will be interesting to see what the Enquirer's sports section looks like in the summer on a day following a Reds travel day off, when there's not really much of anything else going on in terms of high school and college stuff to fill in the gap.

My paper came in the little orange bag today. The comics section sort of rounded the bag. The wind today blew it across the street.

The dreaded Furniture Fair ad reappeared this A.M.I vowed long ago to never purchase from anyone who puts these ads on the paper.

I like it for no other reason that it does not have that Furniture Fair ad wrapped around the front page.

 

I had a bucket where I wadded those things up and shot hoops. After about a month it became excellent starter paper for my firepit outside. Most annoying thing I have ever come across regarding the paper. It's enough to make me not want to go frequent the business.

 

I like the new size but for some reason I feel like I'm getting short changed. The website needs work for sure though.

Yesterday's paper had a note in it that said they currently have an earlier than normal deadline until they get this new format thing going. That's fine and dandy but it is 8:23 and still no delivery at the TAC house!!
