Restaurant Rip-offs - Montgomery Inn

Seriously!? Do we really have to go through this again? I don't see it as a mistake. I think it is unethical. I realize many of you are not going to agree but that is how I see it. If I am being charged $3 for every 5 ounces of milk my child drinks the restaurant/server needs to be upfront about it. That could easily turn into $15 or $20 for about $1 worth of milk.

My girlfriend a I went out to a fairly nice Italian place last weekend. We both ordered our entree then our server said "how would you like your salad".

When I got the bill those salads were $10.00, not part of the meal as she made it sound. My girlfriend was more upset than I was with how she said it bc she hates salad.

IMO, my server was unethical and it hurt her tip.

How do you know she wasn't just trying jack up the bill? I see this as where Guru is going and I agree with him. Like I said "refill" usually means free' date=' "would you like another one" means an additional charge. I've seen my share of waiters/waitresses pull subtle things to up the bill. When I see that, tip goes down.[/quote']

Refill doesn't mean free. When they say refill it means they are filling up your original glass. It depends on the establishment as well. Some say "can I bring you another" for water and soda as well.

It just depends on where you go.

I've ALWAYS been asked if I want another (fill in the blank) when there's a charge. Can't think of a time when I was asked if I want a refill when it wasn't free.

That is exactly what I am talking about!

She should have presented it more along the lines of would you like to add a salad to both entrees.

And while we are on this topic, in my experience Olive Garden can be a little sneaky with this kind of thing.

As a person who was in the business, I know some owners who would have a different opinion chain of thought.

One, it didn't say refills are free on the menu did it? You and others just assumed that because at some restaurant refills are free, that they are free everywhere. Not so....

Two, when the waitress asked if you wanted a refill, why didn't you ask if they were free!

Why blame it on the young lady that you assumed something was free, when it clearly didn't say that on the menu.

Three, Milk spoils rather quickly and isn't cheap anymore. As was stated earlier very few restaurants have milk machine but instead just sell by the small carton and if the business buy lets say a dozen of them and they go bad due to lack of request for milk, the cost of selling those spoiled cartons is passed along to the price of the cartons sold. It's just the cost of doing business.

My suggestion is to look or ask and don't reply on the waitress to protect you from yourself, meaning don't assume.

There I go trying to do two things at the same time again but at least this time you know what I am speaking of. That is trying to do two things at the same time!

I do agree with you some owners would have a different opinion. All I can say is I wish I knew which owners because I would never ever ever go to their restaurant.

^95% of the time the food isn't correct is the fault of the kitchen, not the wait staff. Completely wrong to take that out on them.

Cooked wrong yes, wrong items nope. That's on the server for bringing it to me wrong.

So UKMustangFan, exactly how many times have we been out to eat together?

Thanks for your very uninformed opinion.

My only thought on the issue is the waitress might of felt she would of disrespected you by saying an extra milk was $3 as if you couldn't afford it. Like when I go to chipolte and want guac on my burrito and they say you know its $1.89 extra. I always get ticked I said I wanted guac, didn't ask the price. I think if a consumer wants to know the price ask. But to each their own. It's $3 bucks not a big deal.

I always get the Guac... And when I was there the other day they didn't even ask me about the extra buck 80.

Actually we kissed and made up then UK started on me again.

I can't speak for the original poster, but here's my family's routine when we go to a restaurant like Montgomery Inn. (And we only have one kid, not two!) You get the menus, and the waitress comes by for drink orders...and without even looking at the drink portion of the menu (usually because we've just been handed them moments before) my wife will say she'll have a Diet Coke (and yes, there's been plenty of times that the waitress has asked, "is Diet Pepsi okay?"), I usually have a sweet tea or a Dr. Pepper. Then we'll ask our son (age 10 now) what he wants (usually milk, water or root beer). And then when the waitress leaves to go get the drinks, we're focused on looking on the kids meal to find out what he'll eat , and then frantically searching the rest of the menu for what my wife and I want...all so that we can have our order ready when the waitress returns for our drinks. The point is...we're not memorizing the drink menu and looking for the fine print of what comes with a free refill and what doesn't. So, is that our fault? Partially.

However, as has been stated, the waitress SHOULD know the menu. And, I'm sorry, but free refills have become commonplace enough, that if there's something that ISN'T included...then that needs to be pointed out. I've had waitresses point out that orange juice or my son's bottled root beer don't come with free refills. Sometimes they've even done that ahead of time when we first order, in case we want to change our mind. That is a waitress that is looking out for the customer.

Especially when drinks are commonly 2.79 or something similar for a coke. Or $3 for milk.
