Restaurant Rip-offs - Montgomery Inn

Featured Replies

At the request of the big dog:

Went to Montgomery Inn for my daughter's birthday back in January. My son, being 3, usually always gets white milk with his meals unless he just wants water. We ordered him a white milk with his meal. They brought out a small cup with about 6 to 8 ounces of milk in it. The waitress comes back a couple times during our meal to check on us. As we're about halfway through our meal, she asks if he's ready for a refill, and we say sure. She refills his cup, and we think nothing of it. Our bill comes at the end, $6 for his milk. I don't recall it saying no refills anywhere on the menu, but every restaurant that we've been to where milk doesn't have free refills, the server has always informed us prior to even asking us if we're interested in another. Regardless, $3 for 6 ounces of milk is a pure ripoff. My son drank about 10 ounces of milk for $6. Beers were cheaper than milk.

Thanks for posting that.

I know many of you don't agree but under those circumstances I would not have tipped and I would have told the server exactly why. And I am a good tipper.

I will add for everyone, if you have an example please give your example its own thread.

I'd still tip, but I'd communicate my displeasure to someone. You can get 2 gallons of milk for $6.

And in my opinion the communication would fall upon deaf ears and/or they would take the charge off (which I would not want at that point) and give you that look like you are a cheap you know what.

Make it painful for someone, anyone, and eventually the problem will be addressed.

Why not call or email the manager/owner instead of stiffing the server? They aren't going to be able to change the price, so you're making them work for free because the restaurant marks up milk.

The server won't forget to mention to the next customer after this happens a couple of times now will they?

No matter who complains to who I doubt the price would ever change and when I hear things like this it keeps me from going to that restaurant. I can't stand restaurants/servers that try to pull fast ones for those extra $3 to $5 charges.

I only tipped the 15% as she was slow with our 'free' refills (and by no means was she busy as she only had 2 tables). I did ask her if I had ordered a milk, would I get the same 6 ounces at $3, or would I have gotten a glass comparable to the size of our soft drinks. She looked at me with a blank stare, and after a few seconds of thinking said she's never had an adult order milk before. I politely told her it would be nice to just gives a heads up to customers that certain drinks do not have free refills. I had a feeling that it wouldn't be free as the wife and I even commented on it as he was sucking down his first cup, but when the waitress asked if he was ready for a refill, we got the impression that it was free.

I don't doubt they would have that perception of me, but I'm fine with that. But I'm not sure withholding a tip from a waiter/waitress is going to change anything. They don't set the price, which is my point of contention.

So in addition to being dumb she avoided answering the question or finding the answer for you?

There are enough people who conjure up all sorts of nonsense reasons to stiff servers that I'm not sure how much they would believe you weren't just looking for a reason to go cheap. Telling the restaurant manager or owner about an issue with a specific server would be way more effective.

The server mentioning the info is not what bothers me about this. What bothers me is the price for milk.

I do agree that this kind of price gouging could very well keep me from returning.

I am sure there are a bunch of people on the cheap however I really don't care what they think, if customers were specific with their complaint and didn't tip the server she would rethink her approach.

Again, in case anyone didn't get it the first time, I don't care what they think of me. If they want to rationalize stupidity that is their issue.
