Any players on the horizon that will allow HHS to score in the 60s on a regular basis?

 

The low scores are as much a function of the offensive sets and the sagging man to man / zone defenses.

 

Houliston can score. Green likes to play fast and attack the rim. Buten is a little more offensive minded than point guards have been the last two seasons. Hergott and Weyer shoot the ball well. True and Harris are big enough to score inside. I don't see a scoring explosion on the horizon, but the team will be competitive. Problem again, 5 of the 7 mentioned play football.

Why does that mean you will win more games? Not sure why you are so hung up on how many points a given team scores in a game. What matters is if you have a chance at the end to come out with a victory IMO.

"For HHS to compete into the 4th qtr., they will have to shoot lights out. NCC will need to have an off night from the perimeter - I'm sure HHS will pack it in to protect the paint. HHS will need to rebound the defensive end and limit NCC to one shot per possession. Getting a few of the NCC regulars into foul trouble wouldn't hurt either.

NCC needed to shoot poorly -- they started the game 0 for 6. Birds had lead after 1st quarter. Beuter eventually heated up and hit a few threes.

 

HHS needed to rebound the defensive glass -- Birds did a fantastic job rebounding against the bigger Breds. Seibert got 2 big stick backs in the 2nd half.

 

NCC needed to get a few players in foul trouble -- Seibert had foul issues, but it was a non factor.

 

 

Didn't get that perfect storm that was needed for a Birds victory. NCC survived the scattered thundershowers.

The Birds came out tonight playing aggressively in the 1st qtr dominating the boards and really showing great effort. Witte drilled a 3 pointer early which gave him confidence and the Birds jumped out in front 9-7 after the 1st qtr. The Breds struggled with their shooting and typically only got one look at the basket each time down the floor. The Birds sagging zone was very effective and helped them with rebounding.

 

The 2nd qtr was the difference as NCC came out and scored 8 straight I believe as Beuter drilled a couple 3's. They seemed to exude more confidence in the 2nd qtr but still struggled scoring the rest of the qtr. After Beuter's quick buckets to start the qtr, the Birds tightened up and kept it close as the halftime score was 20-14. A 5 point qtr is not going to get it and that has been the problem most of the year with the Birds. NCC got a couple nice steals as they seemed to know where the ball was going to be thrown a couple times down the floor.

 

The 3rd qtr was tight and back and forth as the Birds hung tough on some big shots by Houliston/Witte and Turner. They clearly led the Birds in this game and kept them in it with their scoring. It was a 7 point game after 3 as the Breds led 32-25 on a stick back at the buzzer by Siebert. Luke Turner had a 3 pointer go halfway down the cylinder and rim back out right before the qtr ending play that extended the lead to 7. That would have cut the lead to 30-28 but instead the Breds capitalize and come down and score.

 

The Birds could never get the deficit under 7 and had to start fouling toward the end. They went man-man with about 3 min left as NCC tried to pull it out and milk the clock. Beuter and McDonald padded their stats late in this one burying FT's as the Birds had to foul. Down 7 with just over 2 min to play Beuter uncharacteristically missed the front end of the bonus but McDonald sneaked in to grab the rebound and was fouled shooting. He went on to bury both Free throws and the lead was 9. That could have been a huge possession for the Birds as they could have cut the lead to 4.

 

Overall a very good effort by the Birds as they definitely left it all out there on the floor. I am very proud of not only my son for giving me a lot of great memories but also the rest of the boys who I have watched grow up and become fine young men and the parents I have met along the way. Its been a great ride !!!!

Congrats NCC on the win. Congrats Q and Highlands seniors on fighting hard in a tough draw. Q-I will miss your reports on the Bluebirds. You told it as you saw it, and you are to be commended for that!

It wasn't pretty for either team, but like many have said so far, there was NEVER a lack of huslte by anyone on the floor tonight. For that these young men are to be applauded. :notworthy:

Good to hear Highlands gave maximum effort.

To much guard play from the Breds. Have to find ways to get the bigs into the game earlier. Yes I understand teams will be focusing on the big men but in order to make an honest run in region and maybe more it all comes down to the big men for NewCath and Grant finding ways to get them the ball in the paint.

AMEN. The two bigs each has ONE shot the first half. Highlands played a good zone, but not that good. The guards were way to quick to put up the 3 pointers. They didn't even bother going inside out to get the shots.

No problem Man, I am a guy who probably should be a little more politically correct at times but I never wanted to sound like "that parent" WHO's kid never made a mistake or whose team always had an excuse. I tried to always be objective for the fans out there. Stinkyboy and Jack of All Trades will pick up where I left off.

Did Anyone notice "Smiley" Mueller down in the corner late in the game yelling encouragement to the Birds? Very nice to see Imo. He just gets it and loves his school.

Highlands did exactly what they had to do and that is keep the score low. Congrats on playing an excellent game and executing the game plan.

Wasn't at the game, however, looks like McDonald was the deciding factor in the 2nd half and especially in the 4th quarter (9 points). I know he had been sick, any update on his performance tonight?

Bueter is the NC's best player and should be in conversation for POY. Just "in the conversation". He does everything out there and aside from game high scoring last night does a ton of other things. Loose balls, blocked shots, and calming the team down. He is difficult to trap as well as he finds his way out of jams. Great High School Player. Should a player be penalized because he HAS talent around him? Last night it was all Beuter until HHS finally had to come out of the zone. Then some others got theirs.

 

On a side note, have to commend HHS crowd for their support. In the midst of a really bad season, they did show up and represent. I thought the crowd would thin out after the girls game. Other than a few grandparents and family, most stayed.

HHS did a good job controlling the bigs of New Cath. McDonald did not do a whole lot until he sank all his free throws at the end of the game. Highlands had their chances. Some turnovers early and some missed shots late and this game could have had a different ending. Very proud of the way Highlands came out and competed. They left it all on the court. This was good hard nosed basketball. Good luck to New Cath going into Regions. If they play Holmes, I will make sue I attend.
