February 19, 201313 yr This is a little off topic but this thread reminded me of my favorite argument I had leading up to this last Presidential election. I was debating a very strong willed liberal who only had one argument on why not to vote for Mitt Romney. Her whole argument was that it would be irresponsible in this economy to vote for Mitt romney because "It is stupid to put a 1%er into the White house" When I informed her that Obama was one of those hated "1%'ers" she was then found speechless. Classic.
February 19, 201313 yr They all surprised me except for Washington. I hadn't really thought about the land values for some of the early presidents. I always thought that Jefferson had run in to some financial problems during his life.

I always thought that Jefferson had run in to some financial problems during his life. If you read "His Majesty, George Washington," you'll quickly understand. Washington was the first of the land owners to challenge what he was being charged by freight forwarders in London. He became fanatical about self-sufficiency on things that could be done in Mount Vernon. He was like Michael Jordan, if you slighted him (real or perceived) he would bury you. He was one of the few landed gentry who didn't die in debt, and that was due to his business acumen and the fact that he wasn't going to be made a fool of by some guy in England. Jefferson never learned that lesson. He always demanded the "best of the best" aka the most expensive goods.

I was also suprised that FDR's wealth was not in the Top 5.

February 19, 201313 yr I knew Washington was our wealthiest president but I didn't realize he was 500 million (in 2010) wealthy. I read that his salary was $25,000 which was 2% of the federal government's budget.
