Basketball the best sport/athletic endeavor?

Featured Replies

A wise old man named Marty Brenneman once said "Baseball is the toughest sport to play well"

Very true. It's also the only sport where if you do good 30% of the time you are considered an above average player.

A majority of offensive linemen cannot play basketball more than 5 trips up and down a full court, skills excluded. Any basketball player can step on the football field and perform.

What if they trained for basketball and lost weight? I disagree that any basketball player can step on a football field and perform.

I respectfully disagree.

I'll say this if you have a guy that has never played organized sports before but is a great athlete his best bet at success would be football. Basketball and especially baseball require a much different skill set that playing WR.

Isn't that comparing apples and oranges and being too specific? I'd imagine that the majority of point guards in the state would be horrible offensive linemen.

But they could be great safeties?

Exactly, a basketball player can play a multitude of positions on the football field. Not all football players could play basketball.

Basketball and Baseball have to be played at an early age.. Football you can wait to play.. I have seen kids that did not start until middle school pass kids that have played at an earlier age. If your athletic you can pick football up much easier..

Most basketball players don't like contact that's why they don't play. I remember in middle school we had some bball kids come out and play, they lasted two days. We had only a handful of kids play both in my four years at high school. You could tell from watching which kids played football when you watched our team. We had a 5-10 center play like he was 6-4 because he would man-handle people underneath because he loved contact, the guys he was playing against didn't want to bump with him.

Basketball is the only sport that requires all players on the floor to play offense and defense in a complete sense. Excluding two-way high school football players, football and baseball players require a a specific offense skill set and defense skill set. Basketball success is probably more dependent on a team concept on offense and defense. Probably only hockey rival basketball for all players having to play offense and defense but the goalie position kind of takes away from the complete aspect of hockey. It would be like adding a 6th player in basketball that only stays under their own goal and plays defense.

I disagree. Centers have good inside O and D, get 99% of them on the perimeter on either side of the ball and they are lost. Get 99% of the guards on O/D underneath the basket and they are lost. Basketball positions are even specialized in a sense. The 1-5 spots all require a different skill set, but the same basic fundamentals. Same can be said about soocer, baseball, hockey, any team sport really.

But they could be great safeties?

Not a lot of them. Most could probably play receiver and may not even do that well. If its a great athlete it may not matter where you put them.

No sport requires the hand/eye coordination, strength, and dexterity of Hockey. Players are flying around on razor blazes at average speeds of 30 mph trying to maintain control of a 3 inch diameter 1 inch thick piece of rubber with a paddle, all the while fending off opposing players traveling at the same speed in the opposite direction. And like baseball, you don't have to be freakishly tall, or freakishly large to pay Hockey either. You have to have skill, though.

As far as I'm concerned, the toughest athletes in the world are Hockey players as well.

To quote Popeye Jones' 15 year old son Caleb, when his high school basketball coach asked, "I know who your dad is; do you want to come out for the basketball team?" Caleb answered, "No, thank you. I'm a hockey player."

Spot on. Beechwood had a senior who was a hockey player his whole athletic life. He stopped playing hockey and played football. He became a starting linebacker and was one of the hardest hitters on the team. No football experience. In general, football requires the least skill of the three sports we are discussing.

But it isn't because of a lack of athleticism that they can't play basketball. Skill yes. Athletic ability no.
