2/8 BBK: NewCath ends Holmes' win streak

Besides the outstanding play of Seibert, NCC's bigs were the difference in the game. Holmes was in trouble defensively any time they didn't have both Englemon and Chames on the floor. NCC's bigs allowed their perimeter guys to play hard D at the 3 because they didn't have to worry getting beat knowing the big guys would take care of the middle. Very few offensive rebounds for Holmes. Holmes needs to share the ball better, especially Palmer. Maybe it was just great D by NCC that cut off all inside opportunities. I would like to see the assist stats for each team. I like Coston's game a lot, even though he didn't get many points tonight.

 

Good points, the guards for NCC can overplay and pressure knowing they have Duch a big frontline.

The final sequence of regulation was about as good as it gets.

 

Bolden hits a 3 to put Holmes up 2. NCC inbounds the ball to Pangallo who brings it up the sideline and looks to be ready to call a TO after crossing midcourt. Grant yells for him to keep going which he does. I wonder if Holmes slowed up a bit thinking a TO was coming. He then dribbled in and drained about a 10 footer. Bolden then shoots one from the OTHER 3-pt line and hits off the front of the rim.

Holmes trailed the entire game, by as many as 11 in the first half, and then in the third quarter shortly after a 6 point play by Seibert (he scores on a layup and is fouled, ref calls it an intentional foul, he sinks both free throws, NCC gets the ball back and Seibert completes the sequence with a 10 foot jumper) Holmes is down 17, 54-37. Holmes hit a three at the end of the third quarter to bring it back to 54-40, but I doubt there was a soul in the building that thought Holmes could make up 14 points in the fourth against this NCC team, well disciplined, long with good ball handlers and shooters, especially since Holmes was deep in foul trouble. Enter Bolden.

 

I am not sure of the stats - seems like he made a bunch of crazy floaters in the lane and at least 3, maybe 4, 3's in the fourth (I would think he had 16-18 points in the fourth quarter alone), and Holmes outscored NCC 29-13 setting the stage for Pangallo to hit a jumper with three seconds to go. NCC was well aware of Bolden, and had Seibert up in his grill the whole night, by the fourth quarter had extended the help double teams out 10 feet past the arc. But when a kid can weave his way through traffic and get to the hoop like he was, even double teams don't look effective. He got just enough space to get a few long jump shots off in the fourth and drained them. It was a special performance against an outstanding team.

I always thought Seibert was the defensive specialist for NCC. 26 points against Holmes...big night for the kid.

I think he was 4/4 for in the 4th with 3 of those being 3s.

Palmer made a 3 in that stretch also. It wasn't turnovers which is usually the case. Holmes got stops, NCC missed FT's and the 'dogs hit everything.

One of the best games I have ever seen. NCC bigs could not be stopped. Seibert and Pangallo played amazing!!! Personally I did not think NCC could handle the speed of Holmes. (CROW) Bolden had a great game...wait until he grows up. And the rest of the team. Hope to see a rematch.

As said earlier, I don't think anyone thought Holmes could come back due to the fact they hadn't shown much intensity previously. When the dogs cut it to 8 after consecutive 3's by Bolden and Palmer, Brannen called a TO and I thought, the Breds will get settled and just make Ft's to seal it. There was probably 3-4 minutes left at that time. Seibert shortly after the TO took a quick ill-advised 3 IMO (probably the only thing he did wrong all night, but he wasn't missing much, who could blame him) and Holmes cut it to 6 on a Bolden drive leaning two. It was then and only then that I thought maybethe dogs can win this thing. The whole building just stated to get intense also. It was fun. I said to my wife to start the last quarter, we'll be lucky not to get beat by 20. NCC had been just that dominant. NCC really didn't lose composure, it was more of the dogs just getting hot and taking advantage of a couple of missed FT's, getting stops and limiting NCC to one shot (which they hadn't done at all game). This one was a tough one for the dogs, hopefully, they learned soe things, although you don't want to lose to do that. In the totality of the game NCC just played better.
